Joe Biden, former President Barack Obama’s VP, entered the presidential race last week promising to ‘make America moral again’, a spinoff of Trump’s Make America Great Again, setting Biden up to be the Democratic candidate who is most sharply contrasted with Trump. Biden became the immediate frontrunner as Democratic voters yearn for a return to the Obama years, an era they so fondly, and incorrectly, remember as a time of harmony and stability.

But in reality, Biden is a historically bad candidate, perhaps better than Hillary was, but still incredibly weak. His decades in Congress in which he flip-flopped across issues and held contradictory beliefs and policies simultaneously, have made him one of the leaders of the Washington swamp. He is so much a part of the political cesspool that many political analysts believe that it will derail his candidacy as voters search for a newer, fresher face to look up to.

Joe also has a long and storied history of saying some of the dumbest things a politician could ever let out of his or her mouth. From calling Obama a “clean” African-American candidate, to telling black voters that Republicans wanted to “put you in chains”, Biden is no stranger to awkward moments, and he will undoubtedly make some more rude comments, putting his candidacy into an even more jeopardized position.

Of course, the fact that Biden is a bungling fool doesn’t give liberal pundits any pause. While hardcore liberals may prefer a socialist candidate like Bernie Sanders, or at least a candidate further left than Biden like Kamala Harris, they are still providing cover for Biden, probably due to the old maxim ‘the enemy of my enemy is my friend’. In this case, Biden is the enemy of Trump, hence Biden is their friend and they must provide him with political cover.

I think what is most concerning about Biden’s candidacy is his utter ineptitude. Throughout the world, Biden is seen as a fool. Friends and enemies alike perceive Biden to be no more than a politician looking to gain ever more power and prestige, in contrast with someone like Trump who had no personal need to run for president. Biden is not seen by most as being able to be a decently competent president. Even Al-Qaeda knew it – after raiding Osama bin Laden’s compound in Abbotabad, hard drives were found on which were plans to shoot down Air Force One with Obama inside it, so that Biden, who they believed wasn’t able to be a normal president, would become America’s Chief Executive. To think that this is the guy that millions of Americans want as president is scary.
