Police and EMS have responded to at least three Motor Vehicle Accidents over the last few hours involving deer, including one on Lanes Mill Road, one on Ridge Avenue and one in the Pine Street area. The Department of Environmental Protection warned motorists last week that this is the peak season for such incidents and avoiding them can be difficult.
Deer are most active during dawn and dusk.
According to ehow.com, the following suggestions are given when encountering a deer while driving
1) “You can slow down as much as you can but it’s still possible you may hit it. I am suggesting to slow down as much as you possibly can”.
2) “DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT swerve to miss it, this only makes it worse for you and your vehicle. Just head straight and hit the deer, DO NOT swerve! The saying is “It’s better to hit the deer, than to swerve and cause more damage”.
3) “If you decide to swerve to miss it, especially if your near banks, there’s a big possibility that you could roll your vehicle and hurt yourself seriously to even death. This is the MOST important step when encountering with a deer”.
who wrote this drivel?
oh deer. this sounds scary!
news must be slow
Hitting a deer can do substantial damages to your vehicle. A deer can weigh as much as 300 pounds. Add that weight to the speed someone may be driving of 35 – 50 mph.
Many accidents occur during dusk and dawn. Without lights, a car can even appear invisible. Always remember to put on your headlights at these times.
A few years back driving on Squankum doing only 30 miles per hour on a Sunday afternoon in October a deer ran directly into my passenger side front tire. In return in spun my car completely into one of the trenches on the other side of the road smack between two trees. 4 more inches to the left or the right and I would have been dead.
A few hunters rushed to my car stating it was most likely their fault as they were shooting off test shots near by and the deer was most likely petrified causing him to blindly run INTO my car. It was crazy and I still get the jitters everytime I’m driving on Squankum.
i always like to think…
WHO IS COMING HOME TONIGHT?
ME? OR THE DEER/PERP/MUGGER/RABBIT/etc?
And guess what- time after time, its me. even if it means the other has to die. IF you serve to avoid a deer, you could hit oncoming cars, fly into a tree, fly into a building, crash into a house, and kill yourself, or other people….
unfortunately- its best if you hit the deer and kill it, versus someone’s mom/dad/son/etc.
When I was learning to drive my father told me never to swerve to avoid an animal. The squirrel/deer/possum is not worth the danger and cost of hitting another car or a tree. Swerve for a child, never an animal. I will slow down, but that’s about it.
i swerved away from a deer and just missed it but before i knew it i had hit a bear. and destroyed the front of my lamborghini. apx $45k in damage so i should have just hit the deer.
I would love to see a 300 lb deer in jersey, or anywhere for that matter
Why not just
hit turbo boost and fly over it
Just remember – when you hit the deer – try to tap him/her lightly to disable; toss the deer in the trunk and fire up the barbecue at home – them’s good eatins!
