Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office & Ocean County Police Chiefs Partner To Combat Distracted Driving; Introduce Free Phone App

oc prosecutor joe coronato fb The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, in conjunction with the Ocean County Association of Chiefs of Police, reminded drivers today of an effective way to stop drivers of automobiles who text while driving. More than half of those polled, stated that they have been in a moving vehicle while the driver was texting. Those who text and drive present a considerable danger to other persons using the roads and expose themselves to serious criminal consequences.

Prosecutor Joseph D. Coronato said: “If it is proven that a driver was texting while driving, the driver will be charged with assault by auto or vehicular homicide. The possible punitive consequences and tragedies that can stem from driving while texting come at too high a cost. The program co-sponsored by my office and the Ocean County Association of Chiefs of Police makes available free to the public a cell phone app that will temporarily disable the texting and calling mechanism of the cell phone in a vehicle travelling at more than 15 miles per hour. Once the vehicle comes to a stop the phone will function normally. This easily installed app will prevent instances of driving while texting, which can mean the difference between life and death for the driver and others.”

Pine Beach Chief of Police, John M. Sgro, who currently serves as President of the Ocean County Chiefs of Police Association said, “Every parent’s nightmare is that a young driver will drive while intoxicated, exposing himself and others to injury or death. Yet driving while distracted is just as lethal a practice. Texting and driving, like drinking and driving, don’t mix. This device is a simple yet effective way to prevent this dangerous practice.”

Prosecutor Coronato continued, “While this safe driving initiative is targeting youthful drivers, it is something that we all should consider installing on our phones, especially in light of the new laws enhancing the penalties for texting while driving. If a parent gives a kid a cell phone, that parent should make sure this app or a similar one is installed on that phone. You can preach to kids about safe driving practices, and maybe they will listen. But this app is a one hundred percent cure for distracted driving.”

The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office is underwriting the cost of a number of these apps and making them available to Ocean County residents at no charge. The cost of the app is paid for through the use of drug forfeiture monies. To receive information on how to download the app and the free coupon code to be entered into the certificate field, call Ocean County Prosecutor Det. David Margentino, Jr. at 732-929-2027 Ext. 2946 or your local Ocean County Chief of Police. [TLS]

  1. Don’t worry. Kids are pretty smart now-a-days and they will figure a way around it.

I’ve got an older phone. No text, no apps, no nothing except talk. It won’t work in my phone.

  2. Unfortunately, most of us drivers don’t have the luxury of being driven we are 99.9% in the drivers seat. I’m sure you understand it’s not intended for the yungerman while his wife is driving him to yeshiva.

  3. This is only the beginning. I’m sure it will become a mandatory software app installed in new phones by cell companies. Remember if everyone did the right thing. We wouldn’t need this.there are those that think it is there right to drive with there cell phones to there ear and actually drive around with attitude.
When they get into a serious accident. They cry why me?

This disregard for the safety of others is not only disturbing it sickening.

    Its about time

  4. I don’t have a problem with this app.
On average in lskewood. There are 15 accidents a day due to careless driving.
yes.cell phone use is a big percentage of this statistic.

    15. Sometimes more.sometimes less

Chew on that for a while!!!!!

  5. No its not designed to work if your not driving but still a passenger.otherwise you could pass the phone to the driver!
Seems like they thought of this so it makes sense that anyone Ianthe car cant make or use a cell phone.

What’s so important that you cant wait to stop or get off.
Remember when it was okay to get back to someone within the hour?
