The Ocean County Audiology Center, located in Lakewood, is giving away free custom made earplugs – a $150 value – for all public employees in Lakewood (Police, Fire, EMS and DPW), when coming in for a hearing test. “Many people working in public jobs are exposed to noise and do not even realize they have hearing loss”, says Dr. Nosson Adam Enock of the OCAC. “Some realize they have hearing loss but are not careful to protect themselves from exacerbating the loss by standing next to a construction site without earplugs.”
“I thought it would be a nice idea to give them custom made earplugs as a show of appreciation for those in the public service”, says Dr. Enock.
Enock says the custom earplugs – which are great for flights too – are more comfortable to wear and help protect the ears more than the spongy disposable ear plugs that are often uncomfortable to use and stick out of the ear.
Enock adds, that education about hearing loss and exposure to noise is very important as well.
“While working for the Navy, I have seen many people who did not know the harm noisy enviroments can cause, and many of them lost hearing because of it.”
