Ocean County Library Bans Smoking on Campuses

library_lakewood_tlsOcean County Library campuses will be tobacco and smoke free beginning November 1st.

The policy, which was adopted on August 17, 2015 prohibits tobacco use and smoking in all forms, including the use of electronic cigarettes and smoke-free oral tobacco products on library grounds.

“The decision to become tobacco and smoke-free campus is important to our mission of “connecting people, building community, and transforming lives” through the power of information,” said Susan Quinn, Library Director. “This includes the library’s role in providing information resources on chronic disease prevention and serving as a welcoming and safe space for the educational needs of the children and teens who use our library system.”

“People smoking at the entrances to libraries were making some people and families feel unwelcome,” Director Quinn said.

  1. Banning e-cigs is a stupid move.

Now that people need to go off cmpu to smoke, they’ll just smoke regular cigarettes.

Besides, theres nothing unhealthy about e-cigs as far as I know.

  2. It’s about time. My kids and I would hold our breath and make a mad dash into the library. The second hand smoke right outside the entrance to the library is deadly.

  3. Being an asthmatic and having smoke blown in my face at the doors of the library has been a health concern for me. I would usually wait in my car until they were finished but sometimes got caught if I didn’t notice a smoker standing too close to the doors on my way back outside. Now next week I won’t have to worry. Thank you for being considerate of those of us who have health issues that we did not bring upon ourselves.
