NJ E-ZPass will be removing discounts from some plans, and to continue receiving the discount, users will need to switch to a NY E-ZPass account.
“At the request of the New York State Thruway Authority, NJ E-ZPass will no longer offer the following NYSTA discount plans: the NY12 Annual Permit Plan, the Tappan Zee Bridge Commuter Plan and the Tappan Zee Bridge Car Pool Plan,” E-ZPass NJ said.
“The 2015 NY12 Annual Permit Plan will automatically be removed from your NJ E-ZPass account at midnight on January 10, 2016; the Commuter and Carpool plans will automatically be removed from your NJ E-ZPass account at midnight on the last day of your plan’s billing cycle in January, 2016.
If you wish to continue to receive these E-ZPass discount plans, you will need to open a NY E-ZPass account. You can do so by visiting their website at www.e-zpassNY.com.

fyi if you plan on switching to ny ezpass you can avoid a $1 monthly fee by either picking a pass up at an mta location or open an account and have the pass mailed to a new York address so the pass will come from the mta otherwise the pass will come from the port authority which has a $1 fee also very important when ordering it to a ny address DO NOT put on any pa plans ie carpool just leave it to a basic plan if you put on a plans it will trigger that the port Authority will issue the tag only once you receive the tag can you put on plans and change to a nj address
@askan4trouble, thanks for the info. Is there anything that can be done for an existing ny ezpass customer?
@Anon
From my experience once the tag is issued by the port authority it’s a port authority account you would have to close the account and open again via the way I mentioned
@askan4trouble @anon the port authority stopped charging the $1 fee a while ago, so don’t worry, order it to any address you want even outside NY.
Keep in mind that it doesn’t look like the carpool discounts for the Hudson River crossings are affected.
Does this affect carpool at the outer bridge?
@Bigal No! Read the article!
@Aiden thanks for the update so what was up with @Anon Question if he doesn’t get charged?? Are you sure do u have from pa?
@askan4trouble Frankly, I have no idea what @anon meant by his question since there is no need to do anything if you have a NY Ezpass account (which btw includes a NYS thruway tag, mta tag, and port authority tag). I personally have a port authority issued tag and I never get charged a monthly fee! All New York State issued tags have no monthly fee and they are all eligible for all New York State EZ Pass discounts and carpool and commuter plans including Port Authority Bridges (outrtbridge, Goethals, Holland tunnel etc.) Please note that in order to be eligible for NJ Ezpass discounts like the NJ Turnpike commuter plan (and a couple other NJ specific discounts) you need a NJ issued tag, Personally, I live in NY and rarely drive on the turnpike so having a NJ EZ pass is not worth it for me. The NY Ezpass give you automatic discounts on most NY area bridges so it is worth it for anyone to have since it is free.
@aiden I have NY PA tags, live in Jersey and DO get charged a buck a month. Am too lazy to cancel and open a NY mta.
can someone put a link on how to open a NY ezpass account &
how to close your nj EZpass account (or just stop using it? no you will still be charged the $1 fee every month)
Does this affect the commuter plans for the Outerbridge, Goethals and Verrazano?
