NJ Residents Overwhelmingly Support Gun Control Measures

A Fairleigh Dickinson University poll shows that an overwhelming number of New Jersey residents support tight gun control law on both state and national levels.

The poll found that 92% of state residents support universal background checks and increase in funding for mental health services, which some say is necessary to confront the scourge of gun violence gripping the US. New Jersey is one of twelve states which already require universal background checks before an individual receives a gun permit.

The poll also found that a large majority of residents – 82% – support the forced seizure of guns from people deemed dangerous by a court. 67% support a nationwide ban on assault-style weapons, and 66% support a nationwide limit on gun magazine capacity. New Jersey passed a gun magazine maximum capacity bill into law earlier this year.

New Jersey has some of the strictest gun laws in the country, and many blue states have been following NJ’s lead with regard to regulating guns. While gun control advocates say the laws are needed to protect people from gun violence, 2nd Amendment activists say that further regulating gun ownership is unconstitutional and an attack on personal freedom and liberty.
