Funeral expenses for police officers, firefighters, EMTs and other first-responders killed in the line of duty may soon be covered by the state. Lawmakers will consider a measure today that would authorize the state treasury department to reimburse family members up to $10,000 for burial expenses. The amount would be reduced by any Workers Compensation allowance, which currently has a $3,500 maximum.
Sheriff’s officers, first aid, ambulance and rescue squad members and correctional officers would also be covered.
The bill gets its first hearing in the Senate Law and Public Safety Committee. AP.

Isn’t that why most people have insurance for – to cover the cost of their burial? With the salary they get they can afford the insurance. If the state was to cover just the VOLUNTEERS, that I would not have a problem with.
Think its a great Idea, to Anonymous says your statement “With the salary they get they can afford the insurance” you make it sound like they are overpaid ~ far from it .
To number one..shame on you. If these brave men and women die protecting YOU in the performance of their duties, they should have their burial taken care of. You sound like a very shallow, self centered person. You sound as if you are the person who always knock police, fire, ems etc but we would be the 1st people you call when you’re in trouble. Take Officer Matlosz for example. He’s out there , trying to make our town a better place and clean up these pieces of garbage that are ruining this town and he gets shot 3 times in the head! The least the state can do is pay to is pay for a burial.
that’s the least we can do for people who place themselves on the line for citizens of the state!
THIS BILL HAS MY FULL SUPPORT!
Police are very well paid. But if someone DIES in line of duty they definitly are deserving of having their burial paid for by the state.
#1 please tell me at what salary point would you consider over paid or would justify the state paying.
sounds like a no brianer to me
