NJ Health Department Confirms New Measles Case, Advises Residents to Stay Current on Vaccinations

The New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) has confirmed a new case of measles in Hudson County and is urging residents to remain vigilant about symptoms and ensure they are up to date on measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccinations.

Health officials report that the case is linked to contact with an out-of-state measles patient and is not connected to previously reported cases in New Jersey. The state is not currently experiencing a measles outbreak, which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines as three or more related cases.

Possible Exposure Locations

Because the individual traveled on public transportation while potentially infectious, NJDOH has identified the following locations, dates, and times where other passengers may have been exposed:

  • NJ Transit Hudson-Bergen Light Rail (8th Street, Bayonne to Hoboken branch)
    August 13–15, 2025, between 9:00–11:30 AM and 6:00–9:00 PM
  • 8th Street Light Rail Station, Bayonne, NJ
    August 13–15, 2025, between 9:00–11:00 AM and 7:00–9:00 PM
  • PATH Newark–World Trade Center Line
    August 13–15, 2025, between 9:15–11:45 AM and 5:45–8:30 PM
  • Exchange Place Station, Jersey City, NJ
    August 13–15, 2025, between 9:15–11:45 AM and 5:45–8:30 PM

Anyone who may have been exposed should monitor for symptoms until September 11, 2025.

Symptoms and Risks

Measles typically begins with a high fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes. A rash often develops three to five days later, starting on the face and spreading downward across the body. Complications can include pneumonia, encephalitis (brain swelling), and serious risks during pregnancy.

Because measles spreads easily through the air and can linger for up to two hours after an infected person leaves an area, NJDOH is urging unvaccinated individuals to take extra precautions.

Guidance for the Public

Anyone who suspects exposure or illness should contact their health care provider or local health department before visiting a medical office or emergency department. This allows special arrangements to be made to prevent further spread.

Health care providers are also being reminded to ensure patients and staff are current on vaccinations and to notify receiving facilities when referring suspected cases.

Measles in New Jersey and the U.S.

  • New Jersey cases in 2025 (to date): 7
  • New Jersey cases in 2024: 7
  • National cases in 2025 (as of Aug. 20): 1,375 across 42 jurisdictions — the highest since 1992.

Measles was declared eliminated in the U.S. in 2000, but cases have surged in recent years due to declining vaccination rates and increased global travel.

The MMR vaccine, given in two doses, remains the most effective protection against measles and its complications, the Department says. Infants ages 6–11 months should receive one dose before international travel, followed by two additional doses after their first birthday.

NJDOH continues to encourage residents and health care providers to take all opportunities to stay current with vaccinations.

Did you know that measles actually suppresses the immune system for weeks or months after getting the infection which can increase vulnerability to other infections?

and the whole theory of measles training the immune system and helping prevent cancer are all bubby maises. There’s no scientific based evidence for any of this, and on the contrary, measles can actually cause immune amnesia.

unless you have actual scientific based evidence that what you’re saying is true, don’t spread false information.

wanting something to be true and actual fact are two different things.

people really wanted Obama and Biden to be the most amazing presidents that ever got into office.

reality was they did more damage in office than most presidents did during their term.

so yeah, wanting something to be a certain way and reality don’t always align. It’s a hard truth to accept, but that’s the fact.
