As earlier reported on our News Alerts (@LakewoodScoop), the New Jersey Forest Fire Service is currently battling a large forest fire at the Burlington – Ocean County border, officials say.
The fire, near Route 72, reportedly began on Monday and has since spread to several hundred acres near the Clayton Sand Pit lake off Clay Mine Road near Woodmansie, according to the NJFFS.
No structures are in the immediate area, and the fire is expected to be contained to approximately 1,000 acres, the NJFFS said. As of 10:20 PM, about 50% has been contained, the Service said.
In addition to the firefighter members, the Service is using helicopters and planes in the supression efforts.
The strong smell of smoke in Lakewood – reported by many readers in various areas around town – appears to be stemming from this fire.

I can’t breathe!
Any way to purify air in the house?
I was wondering why I smelled fire!
I kept checking all around my house, went outside and realized something was on fire outside from the strong smoke smell!
Hope they can get it under control!
