New Traffic Light Goes Up At Sunset & James

sunset james new lightPHOTO: Residents of the Sunset and James area are pleased this morning after yesterday evening’s installation of a traffic light at the intersection of Sunset and James. The intersection just West of Route 9, which has a 45 MPH speed limit, would get heavily congested during rush hours, and has been the scene of numerous Motor Vehicle Accidents. TLS-CAC.

  1. I guess some developer has pull to get a light installed but all our intersections that really need it they want 10 Fatalities before they will even listen to us………. Maybe Dennis Scannel can rotate at other locations directing traffic and teach everyone proper driving in the course of it.

  2. Thank you Lakewood Township. We were actually quite concerned that once the mall on that corner opened and children would be crossing to it to shop that there would be a safety issue. This light solves that

    Thanks!!

  3. Hopefully, this will cut down on some of the cars that race down james towards rt 9 at speeds in excess of 65mph, especially at night…………………………

…. now, will this help prevent guys like the one driving a minivan down sunset at 60 mph 5 minutes before shabbos this past friday? highly doubtful– oh, if you are that driver and reading this, you should know you absolutely terrified my wife and young child in your effort to not be mechalel shabbos, well guess what, putting lives at risk trumps keeping shabbos, so if you cant arrange your schedule to be home with time to spare, drive the speed limit and ask for teshuvah on yom kipuur.

If you are still not sure who you are, you were in the blue odyssey, and we were crossing sunset in the crosswalk near powderhorn, you were racing at LEAST 60 mph and although we were in middle of the street, you kept going, swerving around us missing by inches on the other side of the street.

  4. Hopefully the new traffic light will stop those yukels (including school bus drivers) who turn left out of Sunset right in front of eastbound traffic on James.

  5. #10 so very well said.all of us in the sunset-james area find ourselves distressed with the upcoming new shopping center[with npgs]. and, with the growth of the surrounding areas..i.e.prospect-cross street..the new building going across westgate..we are rightfully concerned about the additional traffic that will result…the planning board needs to examine other options in terms of making new roadways. with the new demographics, sunset and james are overly burdened as the only available routes to this area…and finally i must plead [in unity with #10] EVERYONE SLOW DOWN!!!!!!!

  6. I live on Sunset long before there was ever a development on the James St. corner and speeding down Sunset has been a problem for a long time. I remember when my painter who painted the exterior of my home about 20 years ago commented how much speeding was going on and how dangerous it was. As soon as the New Yorkers and those with a NY mentality started coming in, the nice quiet, calm lifestyle of South of the Lake started leaving. ANd now a mall! OH NO!

  7. First of all as this is a county road, the county put up this light so thank or condemn them not Lakewood.

Second, while I don’t object to a light at Sunset, putting up this light and the one at James and Cross Street before putting up one at MLK or Washington is just plain wrong. At no time of day is the traffic backed up at Cross or Sunset like it is a great deal of the day at MLK or like it is at Washington during school drop off/pick up hours.

On another note why is their a turn arrow for the traffic on James Street who have no opposing traffic but Cross Street that actually needs an arrow so drivers can turn left onto James from Cross has none backing up traffic like before they put up a light.

  8. Another frustrating intersection–drive W/B on Pine St., and try turn left onto Rt. 9, during morning rush hr. The left-turn lane is backed up; it can take several lights till you can make that left turn. A turning light is badly needed.

  9. SINCE THIS INTERSECTION IS ONLY BUSY DURING RUSH HOUR IT WOULD BE NICE IF THE COUNTY MAKES THE TRAFFIC SIGNAL BECOME A FLASHING YELLOW AND RED LIGHT LIKE THEY HAVE AT 14 STREET AND FOREST AVE.
