New Poll Shows Tight Democratic Primary Race for Governor of New Jersey; Ciattarelli With a Large Lead on the Republican Side

The Democratic race for governor of New Jersey is a dead heat, according to a new Emerson College poll released today, with five of the six candidates all within the margin of error to each other.

According to the poll, which was conducted jointly with Pix 11 News and The Hill, New Jersey Rep. Mikie Sherrill leads with 10%, New Jersey Education Association President Sean Spiller and Newark Mayor Ras Baraka tied with 8%, followed by Rep. Josh Gottheimer and former State Senate President Stephen Sweeney tied at 7%. Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop trails the field with 4%.

However, a majority of Democrats, 56%, said they were undecided.

On the Republican side, former New Jersey Assemblyman and 2021 gubernatorial nominee Jack Ciattarelli has a strong 13-point lead over his closest challenger. Ciattarelli received 26%, followed by talk show host Bill Spadea at 13%, state Senator Jon Bramnick at 4% and former state senator Ed Durr at 2%.

47% of Republicans said they were still undecided.

The primary is scheduled for June 10th.

“With less than six months until New Jersey’s gubernatorial primaries, 2021 Republican gubernatorial candidate Ciattarelli emerges as the early favorite in the primary, with presumably higher name recognition,” Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College Polling, said.

“On the Democratic side, the field is more divided, with Sherrill, Spiller, Baraka, Gottheimer, and Sweeney emerging as early contenders, though the 55% share of undecided voters leaves room for any candidate in the race to consolidate support.”

The New Jersey governor’s race will be one of the most high-profile contests in 2025 along with the Virginia governor’s race. The two states are the only ones in the country that hold their gubernatorial elections in the year following the presidential election.

The poll was conducted between January 18-21, with a sample size of 437 Democratic primary voters and 334 Republican primary voters.  The Democratic margin of error is plus or minus 4.6%, and the margin of error on the Republican side is plus or minus 5.3%.
