New Jersey To Ban Hair Discrimination

New Jersey lawmakers have passed a bill that would make it illegal to discriminate against people based on their hairstyles. If signed into law by Governor Murphy, as he is expected to do, the bill would amend the current Law Against Discrimination to include types of hairstyles into the term ‘race’ with regard to discrimination.

Bill sponsor Angela McKnight, who represents New Jersey’s 31st District said that black people are often discriminated based on their hair, which some choose to wear in culturally-specific styles. “Unfortunately, it’s all too common for African-Americans and people of color to be subjected to discrimination at work or school for wearing their hair in braids, twists, and dreadlocks or embracing their natural curls,” said McKnight.

Almost one year ago, a biracial New Jersey wrestler was forced to cut his hair, which he was wearing in dreadlocks, by a white referee, which sparked widespread condemnation and outrage across the US. Governor Murphy tweeted that he was “deeply disturbed” by the story, and said that “No student should have to needlessly choose between his or her identity & playing sports.”

If Murphy signs the bill, which passed unanimously in the State’s Assembly Labor Committee, New Jersey would become the third US state to make it illegal to discriminate against people based on their hairstyle. Senator Cory Booker has introduced similar legislation on the national level.

  1. this law joins the ones that allow you to mutilate your body if you dont like the gender you were born with or to kill your unborn child if you changed your mind about being a parent or to murder an older person because you dont have the time, energy or money to care for the senior

  2. You can’t change the minds of the Politicians that are in Trenton so the only way to change what happens in Trenton is to change people.

    Remember in November!

  3. Just wait till rabbaim start getting in trouble for talking against someone having a chup.
Or how about chas v’shalom trying to stop someone from cutting off their payis etc.
