New Jersey Ranked Third-Best State to Live in

It may be hard to believe, but New Jersey has been ranked the third-best best state to live in, according to a new ranking site.

Personal finance site Wallethub each year releases a ranking of the best states to live based on a scores on several different metrics such as safety, education, crime rates, health, and quality of life, all of which the Garden State was ranked in the top 10 in the nation.

According to the study, New Jersey has the highest median household income in the country, at over $96,000. In addition, New Jersey residents have the second-lowest median debt, the equivalent of around 31% of what they earn in a year. The Garden State has done a good job of tackling poverty, too, with the fifth-lowest share of the population below the poverty line and the eighth-lowest food insecurity rate.

When it comes to health, New Jersey residents have the fourth-lowest premature death rate in the nation, the sixth-lowest obesity rate, and the 10th-best overall life expectancy. One reason for the low obesity rate in particular is the fact that the state has the sixth-most miles of trails and the fifth-most fitness centers per capita, – giving residents of the Garden State plenty of opportunities to stay active.

Finally, New Jersey has the sixth-lowest violent crime rate and ninth-lowest property crime rate, due in part to the fact that it has the highest number of law enforcement employees per capita.

But even though it got the top stop in best states to live in, New Jersey isn’t all good. It ranked 48th in affordability and scored poorly on its economy, coming in at 25.

New Jersey received a cumulative ranking score just below Florida (1) and Massachusetts (2) and a bit higher than Utah (4) and New Hampshire (5).

The worst state to live in? According to Wallethub, that distinction goes to Louisiana, which received low scores on nearly every scoring metric.

  1. It’s all averages. NJ has one of the highest percentage of millionaires and billionaires who have residences here. These people may live elsewhere but their incomes reflect in NJ.

  2. What were these guys smoking when they made this report?
It must’ve been real good stuff.
New Jersey, according to Art Laffer’s index NJ is the highest overall taxed state in the country. New Jersey also pays the most tolls in the country.

    • I absolutely love New Jersey. I have family in Florida and North Carolina. Car and home insurance are more expensive. Groceries are also more expensive too. There are 49 other states, plus DC, Puerto Rico, and all the islands that belong to the USA. You can move out of this state if you want to complain. I love New Jersey so much.
