The state of New Jersey has been ranked as the 3rd-happiest state in the United States, according to a new study done by WalletHub.
The study, which cited the state’s relatively low stress and divorce rates, and stable economy, takes the total score from three different categories; emotional & physical well-being, work environment, and community & environment.
“New Jersey is the third-happiest state, with the lowest share of people reporting traumatic events during their childhood and the second-highest life satisfaction rate,” the study found.
The state also has the second-lowest depression rate and the third-lowest separation and divorce rate in the country, at around 17%.
“New Jersey has the third-highest share of households earning over $75,000 per year. It also has the sixth-lowest food insecurity rate, which shows that the state is making progress when it comes to addressing poverty,” the report said. “Plus, New Jersey has the ninth-lowest share of people who get anxious when thinking about their personal finances.”
Hawaii came in an number one, while Louisiana finished last. Neighboring New York was 23rd and Pennsylvania was 22.
NJ Unhappy With Its ‘Third-Happiest State’ Rating, Consequently Falls To ‘Fiftieth-Happiest’ State in America
Unhappy with its Third-Happiest state rating – as per the latest survey of WalletHub – the state of NJ pledged on Monday that it will “reach the top of Happy-Ratings charts in 2025, and take the crown away from Hawaii, the super-happy arch enemy of the Garden State, and currently the most cheerful and jovial state in America.
“I’ve got plenty of beautiful beaches,” NJ told WalletHub reporters on Monday, “and an abundance of sunshine. But, needless to say, I haven’t been blessed with the same quality beaches and sunshine that Hawaii has, which makes me inordinately sad and exceedingly unhappy. However, I pledge to all my citizens today, that, in September of 2025, I will reach the top of the charts and become America’s happiest state and the World’s most jovial state!”
Shortly after NJ expressed its extreme unhappiness with being rated the country’s third-happiest state, WalletHub re-examined NJ’s ‘Happiness Vitals’ and disclosed to NJ the sad news, namely that NJ had rapidly fallen to the 50th spot in the happiness ratings, and had precipitously become just the 50th happiest state in the country, topping the list as America’s most unhappiest state.
“Oh, well,” NJ reportedly told the WalletHub reporters after receiving the gloomy news, “I’ll go home and have a few beers, maybe that will give me a lift.”
“Great, make sure to come back and see us after you’ve consumed those beers,” the WalletHub reporters told NJ as they bid America’s most unhappiest state farewell, “we’d like to re-examine your happiness level and see how it’s faring after your blood alcohol content has risen.”
