New Jersey MVC Announces Launch of “REAL ID Tuesdays” to Help With Backlog of Appointments

The new announcement comes just days before the REAL ID requirements take effect

Just days before the REAL ID deadline goes into effect, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy and New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJMVC) Acting Chief Administrator Latrecia Littles-Floyd today announced the introduction of “REAL ID Tuesdays” at Licensing Centers.

“As we quickly approach the federal deadline for REAL ID, I am proud to announce the addition of ‘REAL ID Tuesdays’—another tool we are using to expand access to REAL ID appointments,” Murphy said in a statement.

“We have offered eligible residents the opportunity to upgrade to a REAL ID for five years but, as we enter the home stretch before the federal deadline, we will continue doing everything we can to expand appointments.”

The new openings come as residents in the state, especially those with expiring licenses, struggle to find available appointments.

It is important to note that if someone already has another form of acceptable identification such as a valid passport, they may use that document to board domestic flights, or until you can secure a REAL ID driver license or ID at a convenient time.

Beginning Tuesday, May 20 approximately 5,200 additional REAL ID appointments will be serviced at NJMVC Licensing Centers every other Tuesday going forward. These new appointments for “REAL ID Tuesdays” will be available for booking on the NJMVC’s appointment scheduler starting Monday morning, May 5, 2025.

On Wednesday, May 7, 2025, the federal government will commence REAL ID enforcement. Starting that day, individuals will be required to provide a REAL ID-compliant driver license or ID, or another federally approved form of identification, such as a passport, to board domestic flights and enter certain federal facilities.

This latest announcement is in addition to “REAL ID Thursdays,” which the department began making available several months ago.

  1. “Real ID Tuesdays Will Destroy ‘Taco Tuesday’ Specials and ‘Burger Tuesday’ Specials!” Longtime NJ Restaurant-Goer Complains
Pete Frazier, a frequent NJ restaurant diner, who never misses a’ ‘Taco Tuesday’ special or a ‘Burger Tuesday’ special, announced on Friday that he is suing NJ Gov. Phil Murphy and the State of NJ over their ‘Real ID Tuesdays’ initiative, which, he says, will conflict with, and destroy, his “beloved ‘Taco Tuesdays’ specials and ‘Burger Tuesdays’ specials.”
“It seems Tuesdays are the only days of the week I’ll be able to obtain my Real ID drivers license,” Mr. Frazier told reporters on Friday, “the problem is, that Tuesdays are also the only days of the week that they offer those ‘Taco Tuesday’ specials and ‘Burger Tuesday’ specials. Trust me, I haven’t missed one of those specials in years, and I wouldn’t miss one if my life depended on it.”
“Bottom line, I’m not going down without a fight,” Mr. Frazier pledged, “I’m suing Gov. Murphy and the State of NJ in a court of law, so that I can continue to enjoy my ‘Taco Tuesday’ specials on Tuesdays and obtain my Real ID driver’s license on the other days of the week!”
“I mean, who says ‘You can’t have your tacos and eat ’em too!’ ” he said.
However, in response to Mr. Frazier’s lawsuit threat, Gov. Murphy tweeted just moments ago that, in addition to ‘Real ID Tuesdays’, NJ DMV centers will also be offering ‘Taco Tuesday’ specials and ‘Burger Tuesday’ specials at all of their statewide locations.
“While NJ residents are enjoying our ‘Real ID Tuesdays’ initiative, they can also enjoy our ‘Taco Tuesday’ specials and ‘Burger Tuesday’ specials,” Gov. Murphy tweeted. “Order a taco or burger at any one of our DMV locations on Tuesdays while you’re obtaining your Real ID license, and get a 2cnd taco or a 2cnd burger free of charge! Because when it comes to tacos, burgers and Real IDs, NJ DMV’s got you covered! Happy Tuesdays everyone! And bon appetit!”
