New Jersey Health Department Confirms New Measles Case in Bergen County

So far in 2025, ten confirmed measles cases have been reported in New Jersey, compared to seven cases in 2024

The New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) is alerting residents to a new case of measles in Bergen County.

While the case is not connected to previously reported cases, state officials emphasize that New Jersey is not currently experiencing a measles outbreak, which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines as three or more related cases.

The NJDOH is advising parents, guardians, caregivers, and health care providers to watch for symptoms and ensure individuals are up to date with measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccinations.

Measles symptoms include a high fever, cough, runny nose, watery red eyes, and a rash that usually appears between three and five days after symptoms begin. The rash usually begins as flat red spots that appear on the face at the hairline and spread downward to the neck, torso, arms, legs, and feet. Measles can also cause serious complications, such as pneumonia and encephalitis (swelling of the brain), and can lead to miscarriage in pregnant people, premature birth, or a low-birth-weight baby.

NJDOH recommends that anyone who visited the following locations, only during the specified dates and times, may have been exposed to measles:

  • 385 Prospect Plaza, 385 Prospect Ave, Hackensack, NJ 07601, on August 25 between 2:30 PM and 5:45 PM and again between 8:45 AM and 11:30 AM
  • Pediatric Emergency Department, Hackensack University Medical Center, 30 Prospect Ave, Hackensack, NJ, 07601 on August 26, 2025, between 10:45 AM and 5:45 PM
  • Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital, Hackensack University Medical Center, 30 Prospect Ave, Hackensack, NJ, 07601 on August 26, 2025, 3:30 PM through August 27, 2025, 8:30 PM

Anyone who may have been exposed should call their local health department or health care provider before visiting any medical facility. This allows staff to make special arrangements to prevent further spread of the virus.

NJDOH is actively conducting contact tracing and working with local health officials to notify anyone who may have been exposed. Individuals who were exposed could develop symptoms through September 20, 2025.

As of September 3, no additional related cases have been reported in New Jersey.

So far in 2025, ten confirmed measles cases have been reported in New Jersey, compared to seven cases in 2024. Nationwide, the CDC reports 1,431 cases across 42 jurisdictions, marking the highest number of cases since 1992, before measles was declared eliminated in the U.S. in 2000.
