New Jersey Commuters Slammed With Three Separate Toll Hikes

In addition to a new $9 fee for entering Manhattan, toll hikes are coming to the Parkway, Turnpike and all Port Authority bridges and tunnels

The U.S. Department of Transportation has approved New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s congestion pricing plan, removing a final regulatory roadblock from her $9 toll on New Jersey drivers entering Midtown Manhattan.

Under Hochul’s new plan, out of state drivers entering Midtown and Lower Manhattan would pay a new congestion toll of $9 beginning in January. The plan also would require drivers to pay an off-peak rate of $2.25 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. on weekdays, and from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m. on weekends.

This new toll comes just days after the New Jersey Turnpike Authority approved a 3% toll increase on both the Garden State Parkway and Turnpike, the fifth such increase in four years.

And if that wasn’t enough, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey have also approved a new toll hike on the eight bridges and tunnels under their control.

Combined the three new tolls, will add a significant expense to New Jersey drivers headed to New York, or even if just traveling within the state.

The three new toll hikes also coms on the heels of the new gas tax hike which took effect in July.

  1. Per Hochul, she is actually saving commuters $1,500 so by driving to Manhatten you are making money unlike the poor schlubs who dont commute to Manhatten and won’t save this $1,500, same could be said for these toll “hikes” if you look at it the Hochul way you are saving money by paying more in tolls, since they could have been more and they are less. So stop complaining peasant and pay up, cough um I mean save money.

    • Not to mention that since my husband works in Manhattan we have the great honor of paying NY state taxes along with NJ state taxes each year….
