New Jersey “Click It Or Ticket” Campaign Begins Today

Law enforcement officers from the Lakewood Police Department, as well as over 130 police departments across the state, will for the next two weeks be cracking down on unbuckled motorists and their passengers as part of the national “Click it or Ticket” campaign.

Beginning today and running through June 4, the annual initiative includes high visibility law enforcement seat belt checkpoints and saturation patrols, as well as local and national publicity designed to ensure that drivers and passengers recognize the lifesaving value of seat belts.

Of the nearly 700 New Jerseyans killed in traffic accidents last near, approximately 40% were not wearing seat belts.

The Lakewood Police Department received a $10,500 grant from the state to help pay for the two-week seatbelt crackdown.

Law enforcement agencies take a “no-excuses” approach to seat belt enforcement, with the maximum penalty of a $46 fine for a seat belt violation in New Jersey.

Last year, law enforcement agencies participating in the Click It or Ticket campaign issued 8,373 seatbelt citations statewide, wrote 3,315 speeding summonses, and made 278 impaired driving arrests statewide.

  1. Thank you big government for protecting me from myself. Btw, talking from experience, your insurance premiums will go up for these tickets even though they aren’t moving violations.
