New Jersey Aims To Ban The Sale Of All Gasoline-Powered Cars By 2035; Governor Murphy Says

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy announced plans on Monday to phase out the sales of all gasoline-powered cars by 2035.

“Our commitment to bringing the proposal to fruition is a commitment to every New Jersey family and the air they breathe, air that will be cleaner and healthier tomorrow thanks to the steps we’re taking to reduce emissions today,” Murphy, who previously announced his intentions to work toward such a ban, said in a statement.

The plan would require the sale of zero-emissions vehicles – which technically excludes gas-fired combustion engines.

“Through the adoption of zero-emissions vehicle standards, New Jersey can reduce its greatest source of climate-damaging emissions, improve air quality and public health, and support a growing clean-tech marketplace that will create even more green jobs in New Jersey and beyond,” Shawn LaTourette, commissioner of the Department of Environmental Protection, said in a statement.

The plan, which will be made public on the New Jersey Register next month, will call for, beginning in 2026, 35% of manufacturers’ vehicle sales to be only electric vehicles, and increasing by between 6% and 8% each year until 2035.

The new restrictions would only apply to light-duty vehicles, or vehicles weighing less than 10,000 pounds.

The rules won’t take gas-powered cars off the street or ban the sale of used gas-powered cars. They also won’t ban residents from buying them out of state.

Following the publication of the rules, the public will be allowed to comment for 60 days.

  1. @Crazy Gov Murphy: How do you charge an electric car?
With electricity coming from a power plant (a.k.a. a pollution plant)! What a great idea…..

    • Nuclear power. Windmill power. Solar power. There are plenty of non polluting power sources. (yes, nuclear does produce a small amount of polluted/radioactive material, still does not compare to what cars produce.) Oh and less junk in our junkyards. Electric cars seem to last much longer than combustion engine cars.

      • do you understand the level of destruction to the earth that takes place to manufacture a lithium powered automobile and that the manufacturing process generates more emissions and toxic byproducts than an entire lifetime of emissions from a gasoline powered vehicle? are you aware of the reliance of child slave labor involved in extracting lithium from the earth? have you asked a firefighter how they can extinguish a fire in an electric car, and to what temperature the fire burns? are you aware that in the winters in northern climates that electric car batteries cannot function?

        • @me
That may be true. But, even so, to BAN the sale of gas cars to a whole STATE is insane! If you want an electric car, buy one. Don’t let @Crazy Gov Murphy control your life. This aint Soviet Russia.

I was bringing up the point of just charging the cars. But what @Rabbi Rabbinical said is 100% percent true and way worse than the problem I brought up. I was mentioning the “smaller” problem.

Google, ‘how is lithium mined?’. That may be one of the main reasons for “climate change”.
Besides, most lithium is mined in… China! Yay, lets keep supporting China. We all love China….

          • Hi Jack,
What about the kids dying mining the lithium? I won’t be part of that either. The whole thing is a sham. To build an infrastructure to support electric cars will tax our grid to the point where our taken for granted electricity will be rationed.

We have to vote these corrupt monsters out in 2024.

            All the best,

Ron (Ocean CC (R-3), Lakewood (16).

      • Democrats hate nuclear power, wind and solar only work when there is wind and solar, most of the electrical grid is powered by so called fossil fuels, also do you know the amount of pollution it takes to make an electric car. Your last claim is based on what?, first off electric cars haven’t been around long, and there are many times more combustion engine cars than electric ones even since electric ones came out. And even if it was true doesn’t mean they should be banned.

      • Nuclear power is the ONLY reliable power source
At night solar power is NOT produced, so at night we sit in total darkness.
Wind power only works when the wind blows, if we have a calm no breeze day or night they don’t produce power.
Electric cars are not the answer. The power to recharge the batteries is produced by coal and oil fired plants. Also in 10 years when the batteries in your car has to be replaced where are you planning to dump the highly toxic batteries.
Last question, do you own an electric car and are you using gas to heat and cook with?

  2. Dumb ban.
Right now, the production of the battery of the EV vehicles causes more pollution than the any gas powered vehicle will create in its lifetime.
    To “Me”:
Yes, we have alternative power sources, but they are no where near adequate to power our current way of life.
So, if it’s up to you, back to horse and buggy.

  3. New Jerseyans Aim to Ban the Governorship of Phil Murphy Before Murphy Can Ban Their Gasoline-Powered Cars
Irate over NJ Governor Phil murphy’s announced plans to phase out the sale of all gasoline-powered cars by 2035, New Jersey residents on Monday announced plans to phase out the Governorship of Phil Murphy by 2034.
“Were gonna ban him from office by 2034,” said one incensed New Jerseyan, “hopefully this will prevent him from banning the sale of our gasoline-powered cars by 2035.”
However, when informed of the plans of his fellow New Jerseyans, Governor Murphy announced a 2cnd plan of his own to ban the banning of his governorship until 2036.
“This 2cnd ban of mine will enable me to ban the sale of gasoline cars before I am permanently banned from office,” Murphy explained. “Once the year 2036 arrives and I’ve finished passing my historical, signature legislation of banning the sale of gasoline-powered cars, New Jerseyans can do whatever they want to me, and ban me for life.”

  4. How do you charge an electric car , if by 2025 when energy co’s have to stop using fossil fuel to run the plants ? And as it is the electric co’s can’t keep up with the demand !!!

  5. You can’t keep the power on now when a storm comes around why don’t you try fixing that problem first before you worry about electric cars how are they going to be charged without electricity.

  6. Forget EVs. Just ban all liberals, and don’t wait till 2035. The objective is to bring normalcy back to planet earth.

  7. And how are we going to be able to get around when the electric goes out for 12 hours or more. the grid will NOT be able to handle it all. Thank God we will be rid of Murphy soon.

    • even after seeing what happened globally over the past 7 years in full view of the public, do you still actually believe that our votes are what determines the winners of important elections?

  8. Why does Murphy still ride around in a fossil fueled vehicle? If he is so bent on EVERYONE driving electric powered cars he should be doing that NOW!!!!! All state vehicles should be fossil fueled including police, fire, ambulance types.

  9. Would Murthy like to fly in an Electric Airplane??? He must be taking advantage of the legalized Cannabis to make decisions for our near Future. He’s a fool for even rubbing is the wrong way about such a topic when he can’t even handle the (un) severity of a mask “mandate”… Murphy needs to retire in Florida and stop misusing power that he doesn’t have.

  10. If we are SO reliant on electricity (cars, ovens etc…) it’s SO easy for terrorists or a terroristic country to hack our electric grid and we are OUT OF BUSINESS! in one fell swoop! We will be totally paralyed!
