New Details in the Deadly Accident on Rt. 9 in Lakewood

TLS this morning has obtained new details in the Rt. 9 accident which left a young man dead.

Shortly before 9:00 PM on Saturday, police responded to Route 9 and 9th Street for a multi-vehicle accident.

Upon arrival, police learned that a Ford F350 operated by a Colts Neck man was traveling north in the left lane when it side swiped a Honda Accord driven by a Lakewood man.

After striking the Honda Accord, the F350 lost control and crossed into the south bound lane, striking the driver’s side of a 2007 Ford Explorer traveling south on Madison Ave.

When police arrived on scene, the driver of the Ford Explorer had already fled the scene, police tell TLS, and as of now has not been positively identified.

The other four occupants of the Ford Explorer were all of Lakewood.

Two of the occupants were transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center for treatment.

One of the occupants, Oliver Vasquez, 36 of Lakewood, was seated in the second row on the driver’s side. Mr. Vasquez was unresponsive when officers arrived and CPR was started on scene. Mr. Vasquez was pronounced deceased at Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus a short time later.

“Neither of the drivers who remained on scene showed any signs of impairment,” police told TLS.

The accident remains under investigation.

  1. If the driver is found to have been DWI or DUI and there was a fatality, it should be mandatory jail and revoke his license for at least ten years.

  2. just a warning. when you drink or when you drive with no license thinking youll just be very carefull or youll drive slow, you never know what can happen. the ford explorer driver did nothing wrong just driving along and got smashed into….

  3. Why would the driver of the not-at-fault vehicle flee the scene? Perhaps he didn’t want the cops to identify him… I wonder why…

  4. Route 9 (Madison Ave at 9th) was 4 lanes, 10 feet wide, plenty of room.
I say WAS because now you have a turning lane in the middle and two feet chopped off the width of the remaining lanes. A little tight, I don’t take Route 9 if I don’t have too.
