Lakewood once again had more births than any other municipality in New Jersey in 2024, with a total of 5,420 babies born last year, according to newly released state data.
The township, already known for its rapid growth and large families, far outpaced the state’s two largest cities: Newark, which recorded 3,895 births, and Jersey City, with 3,842 births.
Statewide, there were 101,357 births across New Jersey in 2024. Ocean County, which includes Lakewood, accounted for 10,812 of those births—more than 10% of the state’s total. Lakewood alone represented just over half of all births in the county, and 5.3% of the statewide total.
Although the data cannot be broken down by religion, they can be sorted by race.
Of the 5,420 children born in Lakewood, 4,967 were to mothers who identify as white and non-Hispanic – up from the 4,719 born to the same demographic in 2023.
There were 2,741 boys and 2,679 girls born during the year.
The 2024 figure marks at least the third consecutive year that Lakewood has led the state in births. In both 2022 and 2023, the township recorded more than 5,000 births annually—a milestone that few other municipalities in the state have come close to matching.
In neighboring Jackson Township, which has seen a boon in Orthodox Jewish families, the vast majority of them in the 30-44 age bracket, 1,236 babies were born last year – a new record high for Jackson which crossed the 1,000 babies born mark in 2022.
The 1,236 figure is a 23.7% increase from 2022 and a staggering 167% increase in births from 2018.

Huh, look at that. All the people who keep crying that there’s not enough boys for shidduchim, just look at the data. In Lakewood alone there’s more boys than girls. Guess maybe Lakewood won’t have a shidduch crises in 20 years anymore 😉
Shh, you aren’t supposed to say the obvious part out loud.
Exactly. The data of Boy vs Girls born, is known for years. That’s why people are saying the main issue is the Age Gap, not the amount of boys vs/ girls born.
That’s wrong as well.
Even if it was true it would only be a miniscule difference, not the multiple amounts of girls vs boys that we see.
Girls start dating years before boys do, which results in a lot more girls in shidduchim. You have 5 years of girls vs 1 year of boys dating at once.
The problem is the rest of the Frum population also only wants to be Lakewood. Not every boy and girl in shidduchim is born in Lakewood. They are from all over the USA, Canada and other international places.
Bh keep them coming may hashem Bless all the family with the right means to take care of them
Estimated population for Lakewood 2024 was 141985.
That means about 76 births per 1000 people.
Perhaps the highest birthrate in the world.
Yet we are told we dont need a delivery ward locally and need to travel to give birth.
That’s why Chemed is building a hospital in Lakewood
Where in Lakewood? HAs the Vaad approved of this comstruction?
Democrat Squad Members Accuse Lakewood Residents of “Hoarding A Disproportionate Amount of ‘The Baby Pie’ “
With recent data showing that Lakewood Township accounted for 10% of he total birth count in NJ in 2024, Democratic squad members in Congress are accusing the Lakewood community of, “Hoarding too much of the ‘Baby Pie’ for themselves!”
“It is time for us to take back the babies from the hoarders, and to mandate equal baby distribution for all New Jerseyans,” US Congresswoman and squad member, Ilhan Omar, told reporters on Wednesday. “I am calling on the President and congress to institute mandatory abortion in Lakewood, NJ, so that all New Jerseyans can have their fair share of the ‘Baby Pie.”
However, squad member, Rashida Tlaib, insisted that mandatory abortion for the Lakewood community can be avoided if Lakewood residents agree to return their newborns to the hospitals in which they were born.
“No need for mandatory abortions,” she said, “just return the babies to the hospitals and receive 25% rebates on all hospital expenses.”
Thanks to Ocean County NJ has t he highest birth rate in all Blue states.
According to the article, there were 5,420 children born in Lakewood. How is that possible if there is no local maternity ward? There were that many home births?
Is this calculated by households or from data given by hospitals?
It means born to families who live in Lakewood.
Please daven for all the girls who are not zoiche to get married and have families. You gotta have your head in the sand to demean people who are crying about the obvious terrible tzaar that so many b’nos yisroel and their parents are feeling. Shame on you. Why nothing is being done is one of the most not-understandable phenomenon in the history of our nation.
yet everyone who has 6, 9, 12 kids complain that the cost of living is too high and school tuition is choking them dry, what do you expect??
the way of the world is that there are more boys born since boys die more than girls
