New Bill Would Require Shopping Centers In New Jersey To Designate Parking Spots For Shoppers With Children

A new bill introduced in the New Jersey Legislature will require a shopping center or grocery store with more than 100 parking spaces to dedicate parking spaces for individuals who are parking with children not more than 12 years of age.

According to the bill’s text, a minimum of two percent of the total number of parking spaces in those parking lots are to be designated for individuals with children, “in an area of the parking lot that is most accessible and proximate to the shopping center or grocery store, as specified in the bill.”

Each parking space designated for individuals with children is to be identified with a clearly visible sign.

The bill makes it illegal for someone to park in the designated spots, unless the individual is accompanied by a child not more than 12 years of age.

There is no penalty for those that do park there but the bill requires the Chief Administrator of the Motor Vehicle Commission to “promulgate rules and regulations concerning the designation of parking spaces pursuant to the bill, which is to include establishing a fine for individuals who violate the provisions of the bill.”

  1. Finally a bill that makes sense. I was always thinking about it as usually a parent with a child is more limited than a retired elderly. Kudos

  2. How about those capable of walking (and younger) park further away from entrance and leave the front spaces for parents with children and elderly. I’m an elderly but capable of walking and park further away. No need for these bills. Already many spots taken for grocery pickup — why are they up front? Move those to the back. Besides, parents with children have managed just fine in years past and why now is it an issue?

  3. More nanny state idiocy, also why 12, 12 year olds can walk as could younger, it should be for infants and toddlers up to maybe 5 years old.
