A Senate committee today unanimously moved forward a bill that would restrict the amount of sick and vacation time current public workers are allowed to accumulate, setting caps and freezing accruals for employees already over the limits. The bill (S2220), which must be passed by the full Legislature and signed by the governor, would allow workers to save up to $15,000 worth of unused sick time and freeze savings of employees who are already beyond that point.
Unions say workers are asked not to take the sick days so municipalities and schools do not have to hire substitutes or pay overtime for other replacement workers. But municipalities, years later, can get socked with a big bill of, in some cases, hundreds of thousands of dollars once the worker retires.
Unless they are already over the limit, employees would not be allowed to carry over more than a year’s worth of vacation. Read more in Star Ledger.
how stupid, how about just eliminate the buy back of unused sick and vacation days. The days are time off that you can use b ut still get your salary, if you chose not to take those days, oh well! at most, you can accumulate some additional days, but to have the govt pay hard cash for these extra days is rediculous – — that would be like asking your car insurance for your premiums back if you do not file a claim
Son they will do the same in NY state
So these employees are suppose to call out sick everytime I have a headache or don’t feel well. I can hear these local, state and county employees now “Awesome more overtime is in the horizon”. Pay now or Save now I wonder what is a better option, especially nowadays.
The other area these Politicans should look at is take home vehicles. They should ask themselves do the employees really need to take them home. Do these employees really respond 24/7, I don’t think so, probally about 3/4 of them don’t do any business until the next day. I have seen vehicles with MG, SG and CG license plates driving their families around, shopping trips, and even sporting events. These employees are not working either and if they are they shouldn’t be running personal errands or transporting their families on the tax payers time/money. Why should we have to pay for this. I think this could also be a significant savings to the taxpayers, fuel, vehicle maintenance, etc…
