Lawmakers in New Jersey are considering additional prohibitions on those who talk or text while driving. A bill sponsored by Sen. Richard Codey would increase fines and impose license suspensions for drivers who ignore the ban on talking or texting on hand-held phones. The fine is now $100. The Codey bill would increase the penalty to $250 for a second offense and to $500 for subsequent offenses. It also would impose a 60-day license suspension for those who violate the law three times or more.
The bill gets its first hearing in the Senate Law and Public Safety Committee today.
Another bill being considered by a Senate panel bans the use of cell phones and other electronic communication by bus and train operators while the vehicles are moving. AP.
If they would just take away licenses instead of raising the fines, there would be no traffic in Lakewood.
Make it $1B! Fines are just a stealth tax. I’m not saying regulations and fines aren’t needed but when Government raises fines it is just to raise “revenue” and then it just falls into the realm of taxation.
we live in a world now where common sense is non existent , anything that takes your attention away from driving can lead to a tragic accident and cost you or some innocent person their lives.
As far as I’m concerned this is as bad as driving drunk. I often said to my own children when growing up “one second of stupidity can result in a lifetime of grief”
It is time for the police to be more vigilant ticketing these drivers. Perhaps the phones should be confiscated and given back to the owner when they pay their fines.
throw theese (moderated) out of office enough with thhis increase of fines don’t they have common sense?
we all agree texting an talking is not safe but these fines an suspencions are out of hand.
The Rabbis should address this to the congregations both men & women. Especially in school zones.
I got a ticked for talking on my phone in Ocean Township NJ, the fine was $130!!
