N.J. Has Lots To Lose If Health Reform Legislation Is Repealed

As the House of Representatives held another vote on repealing the Affordable Care Act yesterday, it was easy to dismiss the effort as political theater. But for millions of Americans who rely on the law’s benefits and protections, the devastating effects of repeal would be all too real. Here’s what repeal would mean in concrete terms for families in New Jersey and across the country.

Thanks to the law, all Americans with insurance are now protected from some of the insurance industry’s worst abuses, such as having their coverage canceled when they get sick just because they made a mistake on an application, or facing a lifetime dollar cap on their benefits. Already, 3.3 million New Jersey residents, including 1.2 million women and 877,000 children, are free from worrying about lifetime limits on coverage.

For people such as Judy, a nurse I met who’s battling stage 4 breast cancer, these protections can be the difference between life and death. Judy has good insurance, but her expensive radiation and chemotherapy treatments mean that, without the law, she’d likely hit her lifetime cap in just a few years. For Judy and millions more Americans, repeal would mean a return to knowing they could lose their coverage at any time.

For tens of millions of Americans with health insurance, repeal also would mean paying more for preventive care. Under the law, 54 million people with private health insurance, including 1.7 million in New Jersey, now can get free preventive care, including vaccinations, checkups and cancer screenings. Repeal would mean that hundreds of dollars in savings a year could disappear for everyone. Read more by By Kathleen Sebelius in Star Ledger.

  1. Please take note that this guest post in the star ledger was authored by Obama’s Secretary of Health and Human Services. Let’s wait for the other side of the picture to be presented as well..

  2. What is Romney and the Republicans offering to replace Obamacare? They wan to repeal it, but have nothing to make our broken healthcare better. So we should be content with 54,000 Americans dying because they do not have healthcare. We should be content with 60% of personal bankruptcies being filed because of medical expenses. Those who oppose Obamacare are biting off their nose to spite their face. The benefits of Obamacare are an advancement in America as a civilized nation.

  3. What have the Republicans offered as a replacement for Obamacare? They want us to return to the status quo where it was OK for 54,000 Americans to die each year because they did not have healthcare insurance. They want us to return to 60% of personal bankruptcies because of medical expenses. They want us to return to people foregoing medical treatment because they can’t afford it. They want us to return to being a nation that would rather pay for wars than medical care for it’s citizens.

  4. TO: #2:
The original price tag for Obamacare was $800 Million. Today by the GAO est it is now up to $2.6 Trillion. Who do you think will be paying for this? What benefit will anyone that works will see? Obama said no tax increase for the middle class, guess what the Supreme Court ruled it is a tax”. In just a few years instead of helping out a few people this Law will collapse the entire health care system we have. It will go bust and then watch the taxes get raised to try to keep it afloat. This law is a bad idea that only gets worse time.

  5. Maybe individuals who disagree can opt out and pay their tax and then be left for dead when they require emergency care but have no insurance.

  6. This story is one sided from the Obama regime. this article is just scare tactic. I pray that Romney wins and the GOP repeals it and we start over.

  7. Why do people think that there is such a thing as “free healthcare”? While it is very sad that many people have situations where they require services and cannot afford them, the ultimate question is whether others are responsible to pay for their needs. Before you toast your champagne glass to Obamacare, why don’t you sit back and think for a moment if you want all your hard earned money taken away (forcibly) to pay for someone elses needs.

  8. N.J. Has Lots To Lose If Health Reform Legislation Is NOT Repealed!!!

Let me get you some professionals who have reviewed “Obamacare” at length with every detail they can explain that it will bankrupt healthcare and eventually our entire economy if it goes through!!

  9. what ppl don’t understand is that YOU WILL NEED TO PAY FOR IT!!! government paying for it doesn’t mean free! Someone will have to pay the bills in the end of the day or our dollar will end up worthless and our country will collapse. Why do people think that government is the solution? They are the problem! I am currently paying my own health insurance and it is much better than when I was in Canada and COULDN’T GET THE SERVICES I needed at ANY PRICE. where the gvmt decides when to pull the plug b/c they are paying for the machines. where you can wait months for any stupid VITAL procedure and can only get it done within the year if you have major “pull”. There are so many cons, why don’t people open their eyes?

  10. Doea anyone realize that Massachusetts hates RomneyCare, which is why they voted for Scott Brown because he promised to vote against ObamaCare????

So yea, RomneyCare didn’t exactly work out, so let’s stuff it down the throats of the rest of America. Yea!! At least Romney promises to repeal ObamaCare. Obama won’t. Great reason to vote for Romney. (Besides for all the other great reasons.)
