Multiple Lakewood girls schools have canceled Friday classes due to a lack of available bus drivers.
Bnos Devorah and Bais Shaindel have both informed parents that there will not be school this Friday as the LSTA will not be providing the busing necessary for schools to operate in a functional manner.
In a letter sent to school parents, Bnos Devorah administrators wrote that they attempted to secure private busing services to bring their students to and from school, but to no avail.
The bus driver shortage is due to a holiday on December 25th, with many drivers taking off early.
Askanim involved with schooling issues told TLS that it is generally not as much of a problem when the holiday falls out on a weekday, because parents can drop off and pick up their children.
However, being that the 24th is a Friday this year – a short day to begin with, and with Lakewood traffic being snarled even with busing available, forcing parents to drive their children to school is simply impractical.
A child once told his rebbe that he’d like to become a bal habos.
When the rebbe asked him to explain, the child replied, “If I owned a bus, I could take everyone to school with my bus, and we wouldn’t have to rely on all the other bal haboses.”.
Why in the world are the the school schedules decided by the bus companies? I know of a girls school where the entire school including 8th grade gets dismissed at 3:45 because of bus scheduling! It’s absurd. Why don’t schools get their own busses and let the government funding go directly to the schools? Am I missing something? I believe most Brooklyn schools have this system. Granted the shortage of drivers wont be alleviated but at least the schools can decide on their own what the schedule should be
in respose to what in the world??? BECOME A BUS DRIVER so when the the schools decide their ow schedual they will have at least one bus driver!!!!
I don’t get it. The holiday this year is not on Friday. As a courtesy, the drivers were given the day off on the holiday itself. They will have that this year, also, even if they work on Friday. There are plenty of days during the course of the school year that the bus drivers have off for the Yomim Tovim. The least they can do is drive on the days that the private schools are open!

Why is this a new story?
Christmas Day is one of eleven federal holidays recognized nationwide by the United States Government. All non-essential federal government offices are closed on Christmas Day, and all federal employees are paid even if they receive the day off. Many private-sector employees will also receive paid time off or special holiday pay on Christmas Day.

I work in a local office and dont get legal holidays off and so far this year this is the third legal holiday my daughter is getting off!(Due to busing ofc:)) If you work in a school you get both legal holidays and midwinter chanuka vacation etc not bad!!the girls are off every other week!
I just want to know, I believe this is the second year in a row that they’re doing this to us. Why don’t the schools have these holidays as a off day on the calendar so that the Moras can have the day off as well. How do parents expect the Morahs to do their groups (cuz after all, there’s never bussing) with all their kids home? And the chutzpah for those parents that are off and just want to send the kid out because the morah is going above her duties to do this extra day. For some reason, the schools can cancel right and left but if a morah decided on a day off wo to her!
its about time that we dont have school on friday and instead have on sunday. friday should be the off day from work instead of sunday. life will be less complicated
