Special Counsel Robert Mueller will testify in front of the House Judiciary Committee and the House Intelligence Committee beginning Wednesday morning, after two years of investigating Russian interference into the 2016 elections.

Aside from a 448-report released to the public a short while ago, Mueller has stayed completely silent regarding the investigation, even saying that he preferred not to testify before Congress and that his report should speak for itself. But House Democrats demanded that he testify to their panels, saying many unanswered questions remain.

Regardless of the facts of his investigations results, Americans should expect Democrats to attempt to make Mueller’s testimony a spectacle in which President Trump is branded a traitor to his country, while Republicans will seek to show that Trump did not collude with Russia and that the investigation was predicated on a discredited dossier compiled by a former British spy.

Mueller is known to operate strictly “by the book” and it is unlikely that his testimony will reveal much more than what has already been published in his report. The Department of Justice also sent him a letter demanding that his testimony not stray from what is contained in his public report.

Democrats will undoubtedly ask Mueller whether he believes President Trump attempted to obstruct his investigation – he said that he could not rule out that Trump committed obstruction of justice. “We concluded that we could not reach a determination one way or the other about whether the president committed a crime. If we had confidence that the president clearly did not commit a crime, we would have said so. We did not, however, make a determination as to whether the president did or did not,” said Mueller. Democrats have been saying that if Trump did obstruct justice, an impeachment vote should be held. Attorney General William Barr and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein determined based on Mueller’s findings that Trump was not guilty of obstruction.

Besides for the question over whether Trump obstructed justice or not, Democrats will likely ask Mueller whether AG Barr misrepresented Mueller’s report in his summary to the American people prior to the release of the full redacted report, and why Mueller did not pursue and interview with Donald Trump Jr. regarding a proposed Trump Tower in Moscow that was being discussed during the 2016 campaign and in what way that may have affected the election.

Mueller’s testimony is expected to be watched by millions of Americans eager to get a clearer understanding of what actually happened during the 2016 campaign and whether the president did or did not attempt to obstruct the investigation.

But at the end of the day, Americans are probably pretty much set in their beliefs in regards to Trump and Mueller, and barring some major revelation by Mueller, it is unlikely that his testimony will make much of a difference to President Trump’s prospect of reelection.
