New Jersey Governor Murphy is slamming the New York City Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) after their board granted final approval this afternoon to a congestion pricing plan which will charge vehicles at least $15 to enter Manhattan below 61st Street, describing it as a “blatant cash grab.”
“This is far from over and we will continue to fight this blatant cash grab. The MTA’s actions today are further proof that they are determined to violate the law in order to balance their budget on the backs of New Jersey commuter,” Murphy said.
Murphy, who has long voiced his opposition to the controversial measure, also promised to continue fighting it in court, if necessary.
“We will continue to avail ourselves of every option in order to protect residents on this side of the Hudson from an unfair tolling scheme that discriminates against New Jerseyans, especially lower and middle-income drivers,” he said.
Truck and bus drivers would have to pay between $24 to $36.
The full, daytime rates will be in effect from 5am until 9pm on weekdays and from 9am until 9pm on the weekends.
Barring a legal setback, the new charges are expected to take effect in June.
The new toll, which will disproportionally affect New Jersey drivers, comes on the heels of the new gas tax hike which will take effect in July, a recently announced NJTransit fare hike and higher tolls on the Garden State Parkway and New Jersey Turnpike.
Like the cash grab Murphy signed in to law yesterday, raising the gas tax again.
The Murphy Administration is just as guilty for doing cash grabs.
Think gas tax increases, property tax, among other taxes & regulations.
talk about Murphy’s law-this guy is gonna be laughed out of anywhere he tries to fight this plan.
you are raising taxes and tolls in every direction but when NYC does it, it is a cash grab??
if he wins this fight it will be good for us Jersey drivers but the hypocrisy is gonna make him look like a fool.
Now let’s get some public transportation to go with that!
Murphy just signed a bill to steal even more money from NJ drivers by raising the gas tax to pay for road construction instead of lowering the cost which is the highest per mile cost in the nation. He doesn’t care about the cost to NJ drivers he cares that some other state is getting that money.
A governor who has led NJ down the path as the highest tax rate state in the nation, should not be critical when others do it.
It’s only a cash grab because he is not getting any of the $$$$
