Motorists Being Ticketed For Driving With Snow On Top Of Their Vehicles

Motorists in Lakewood are being pulled over and ticketed today for driving with snow on top of their vehicles.  The law – which went into effect last year – requires motorists to remove all ice and snow from their vehicles before traveling on the roads. The requirements include removing snow and ice from the hood, trunk, windshield, windows and roof of the vehicle.

Violators will get pulled over if the officer believes the accumulated ice or snow may pose a threat to other drivers or to pedestrians. Fines are not less than $25 or more than $75 for each offense regardless of whether any snow or ice is dislodged from the vehicle.

Fines increase to $200 to $1,000 when injuries or property damage occur. Commercial motor vehicle drivers face fines ranging from $500 to $1,500 for each offense. There are no points involved. TLS.

  1. Have you ever been in back of a car or truck with snow and ice on top? It is not fun with that all blowing in your direction, very dangerous. Take a minute and brush it off. Also clean the windsheild, don’t let the wipers do it before you drive off.

  2. What does the DPW have to do with cleaning the snow off cars? My road is perfectly dry. Also how about cleaning sidwalks, there is a law that the sidewalks have to be cleaned so many hours after a snow.

  3. Why is it a problem for LPD to enforce the law and help insure the safety of motorist and pedestrians alike?

Every motorist has a responsibility to clear snow and ice from their vehicle prior to entering public roadways.

  4. #2, what does the DPW doing their job have to do with it being “not right” that people are being ticketed for breaking the law and doing something dangerous? As if a “case study” is needed, I was driving on the parkway last night and snow flew off a car almost completely covered in snow (they just cleared the windshields so they can see out) straight at my car. I almost made the news for crashing off the outerbridge…..

Instead of waiting to ask for names for tehillim of an injured person, why not try to prevent the need to say tehillim in the first place????

  5. The law wasnt for when there’s 1 inch of snow.
when there’s 18 inches on your vehicles and it blinds someone for 5 seconds and they crash, i can hear.
    This is more like opportunism.

  6. why would you want dpw out there and pay them overtime when it will all melt in 48 hours
you want your taxes going up again to pay for it ??????????????

  7. What you can do is the same thing that I did. Turn on the motor, turm the heat to the highest, and wait a half hour. After that, the ice should be melted enough that you can scrape it off easily.

It definitely takes work and time. But you must follow the law.

As soon as we decide that we do not have to follow the law because “it is too hard”, someone else may decide that it’s too hard for him to follow the law of “Though shall not steal”.

Our society is governed by laws. We need to follow them. If you want the law changed, vote in new polticians who will change the law. But until then, we all follow the law, as hard as it may be.

  8. The dpw should have salted all the roads today , there we’re many accidents from turning off a countly cleared road on to an icy city road. Even the police complain, but the residents need to voice theri opinion. The temperture didn’t even reach 35 f today and tonight its going to be an ice rink of black ice.

  9. TO # 8
IT IS NOT THE JOB OF THE DEPT OF PUBLIC WORKS TO CLEAN THE SNOW OFF THE TOP OF YOUR CAR.

I’M SURE YOU ARE AWARE OF THIS . LET’S DO SOME WORK TO PREVENT DEBRIS FROM FLYING OFF THE TOP OF YOUR CAR AND HITTING THE CAR BEHIND YOU.

IF IT WAS YOUR CAR THAT WAS HIT, I’M POSITIVE YOU WOULD HAVE A LOT TO SAY ABOUT THE DRIVER IN FRONT OF YOU

  10. Oh and I forgot to mention earlier that when the huge chunk of ice hit my windshield last night, I almost lost control of the car so not only did you crack my windshield, you nearly killed my kids……

So yes, laws are here for a reason. Ice on your car is dangerous. So quit whining, stop being lazy and get out there and clean your car. I did. (well my wonderful husband did it for me)

  11. Why hasn’t the town limited 9th and 10th streets to parking to one side ONLY on both sides of the old baseball field…another winter of snow embanked cars… its to tight with out the snow

  12. im shocked from this town…it barely snows an inch and they cant get their act together and clean the roads properly…im from out of town where the streets are cleans in a timely matter…wheres all r tax money goin to?????? it snows, get into ur trucks and at least salt the place up…drive around youll see some streets literally sheets of ice..k so lets look at the bright side to all this….free skating for my kids

  13. I guess no one listened to the warning! Shovels, salt…. Not everyone can do what you are bound by law to do. Forget the streets being icey… Forget DPW…. Residents were not seen pushing any shovels in front of their responsible property??? Oh I forgot above the laws and regulations… Ask and receive, but do not recipricate… No fault of anyone but your own selfishness. This is life and how you choose to live it is all up to you.

  14. Buy a tarp for $10 and fix it over your car at night when snow is expected. It is a treat to just pull the tarp off your car and Viola! A snow/ice free car is yours to safely drive

  15. Oh bye the way,did you know if it is a big snow fall the DPW will plow your car in as they clean the roads. When a big snow is expected pull your car in the driveway and then the roads can be cleaned properly. If you want the job done the right help a little and do the right thing.
