Motor Vehicle Inspections End Tomorrow

inspectionTomorrow is the last day that New Jersey will inspect motor vehicles for mechanical problems. Inspection stations will just check emissions on vehicles five years or older starting Monday. Motor Vehicle Commission administrator Raymond Martinez says the changes will save the state about $17 million. Most of the savings come from scrapping 2.4 million mechanical inspections and re-inspections performed each year and by shifting new car emissions testing back a year.

School buses, limousines, jitneys, taxis and other commercial-plated vehicles will still be checked for emissions and mechanical defects.

New Jersey will become the 30th state that doesn’t look for bald tires, worn brakes, non-working lights and turn signals, and cracked windshields. AP/Star Ledger

  1. Can someone explain this to me – they made these ‘safety’ inspections to keep us safe and now they don’t care about safety anymore? What about the “check engine light”?

  2. My car was overdue for an inspection by about a year. So I went to inspect it in July and passed the emissions, but, the inspector said a light was out. So what do I do now? I still have to reinspect it? (I don’t even think the light was out, I checked it before I went there, so I don’t even know what to fix.Maybe I should just go to another inspection station so I don’t get the same nasty inspector.

  3. i recently had my car inspected at a state inspection center. it passed on the first try. less than 2 months later i had a flat on the highway. when i changed the tire i noticed that the inner side of the tire was totally worn through the steel. in previous inspections i would have failed for bald tires. i am very mechanical and usually pay attention to theses things. i didnt notice it because the rest of the tire didnt look too bad. i guess i need an alignment so the tire didnt wear on the visible part. my point is the new inspection law has its disadvantages as well. please dont rely completely on the inspections. too many people drive around with bad tires and dont realize it. when they get a flat on a trip they end up damaging the rim as well which ends up costing more than just buying a new tire, please pay attention to condition of your tire now that the inspection will do that for you.

  4. to what should i do now. perhaps you should wait till the 45 days are up and go for another inspection. you should however make sure all your lights are working. most of the lights serve a purpose, if not for you, for other motorists on the road. its ver annoying when the car in front of you is missing a bulb

  5. From what I understand- any vehicle that was brought in that failed inspections before 8-1 will need to pass mechanical inspections even after august 1. They have in the computer who failed in order to counteract people waiting until after 8-1 in order not to fix their cars
