State Sen. Jeff Van Drew (D-Cape May, Cumberland, Atlantic) is pushing for legislation that would loosen the requirement to own a handgun in New Jersey, according to a report. The legislation would allow ownership if applicants pass three different gun safety courses and a background check, the report said.
Current state law only gives carry permits to those who demonstrate a “justifiable need” to their local police chief and then a Superior Court judge — a nearly impossible hurdle, Van Drew says.
The Star Ledger previously reported, that New Jersey residents may purchase handguns through a permit process that involves being fingerprinted by local police and undergoing a background check. A permit must be obtained for each handgun purchased, and the buyer must go through a background check each time he or she wants to buy another pistol.
The state also has strict regulations guiding how handgun owners may transport their pistols outside their homes, requiring the pistol to be placed, unloaded, in a fastened case and carried in the trunk of a vehicle. If the vehicle has no trunk or separate compartment, the unloaded handgun must be kept in a locked box out of reach of passengers.
Those rules also apply to the handgun owners who hold special “carry permits” unless otherwise specified in the permit that allows them to have their handgun on their person. Each “carry permit” is tailored to the person holding it, setting the specific hours in a day, days in a week and the exact locations and circumstances in which a handgun owner may carry his or her gun. This is not the wild west, we don’t everyone who can afford it running the streets with guns. I have several and know how to use them, all it takes is one idiot to threaten someone and then the shootout starts. I say hell no
If it is legal then good. There are ALREADY many illegal guns on the street we need to even them out! (So we can have a fair fight)
Yes. Let’s put guns into the hands of the most aggressive drivers in the country. Flashing headlights will be the least of our problem.
There is nothing you can do about illegal guns, its the same as illegal everything else, drugs, etc. You can not get rid of them, but lets give everyone a gun out there, people I don’t trust with a water pistol lets give them real bullets to shoot it out with the bad guys with illegal guns, and put the police in the middle. UTTERLY RIDICULOUS!!!!!!!!!!

That makes no sense at all. Why would someone shell out all their money to obtain a carry permit to shoot out of the car window when they can do it for free already?
The same people who “shell out” money on houses, cars, and/or vacations they couldn’t afford in the first place. Given the opportunity, I think many drivers would take advantage of this proposed new law, and use it for unnecessary situations.
do the residents of PA. go around shooting bad drivers????? owning a gun is a big responsibility, and using it can be catastrophic, so i think anyone granted a ccw will only use it if and when it comes to a life and death situation.
