Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus, Dedicated to Diversity and Inclusion

Diversity and inclusion are an important part of a well-rounded hospital, according to MMCSC Chief Executive Frank J. Vozos, M.D., FACS.

“At RWJBarnabas Health, we believe life is better healthy, and we recognize that each of the communities we serve are richly diverse, comprised of individuals of all ages from a range of backgrounds, ethnicities and religions,” Dr. Vozos says.  “By connecting with our communities, we have developed a deeper understanding of the issues and barriers causing health disparities on a local level.  We understand that specific ethnic and racial groups are more prone to certain illnesses and diseases and that many encounter language, cultural and socio-economic barriers that   make it more challenging to access appropriate health care.”

As such, RWJBarnabas Health has developed a variety of unique programs devoted specifically to the local communities.  These programs enable our care teams to provide culturally competent care to improve the health and wellness of all the communities we serve and reduce health disparities.

RWJBarnabas Health facilities offer a multitude of highly specialized programs for our diverse populations including the orthodox Jewish, Latino, African American, Russian, Asian and Hindu communities.

“We truly believe that by connecting with our local communities, we are better able to understand and respond to the health care needs and challenges of our different populations, expand access to care and enhance wellness,” Dr. Vozos says.

For example, Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus, has a variety of services and facilities available to meet the needs of patients and visitors from the observant Jewish community.

“We make every effort to ensure that the hospital stay is a comfortable, meaningful and positive one for our orthodox Jewish patients,” Dr. Vozos says. “On the Sabbath and holidays, patients and visitors can enter Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus, through manual doors, and a Sabbath stairwell is located near the elevators in the main lobby for access to upper-level patient care areas. We also offer kosher pantries and prayer books, and can help arrange for Shofar during Rosh Hashanah, Megila reading during Purim, and Sukkah is available during Sukkos.”

Additionally, Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus offers community-specific programs through its Community Health Education Department. A recent example of this was a Matthew J. Morahan Cardiac and Concussion Screening program with a targeted focus on Hispanic children in Lakewood. Of the 66 screenings conducted, and 75 percent of the participants were Hispanic.

And as a health care provider, Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus, is also committed to having a staff that reflects the diversity of the community it serves.

A diverse workforce enables us to effectively draw on diversity of thought to enhance the quality of care we provide and the experience of our employees, patients and community,” Dr. Vozos says.  “Diversity and inclusion thereby, strengthen the ability of Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus, to deliver culturally competent, family-centered care.”

MMCSC strives to attract, retain and develop a diverse talent to leverage the diverse knowledge, skills, abilities and experiences that promote creativity and innovation in health care delivery.

“To this end, we strive to be the diversity and inclusion leader in health care; benchmark best practices to create an inclusive, safe and engaged environment where everyone can excel regardless of race, ethnicity, national origin, and gender,” Dr. Vozos says.

With rapidly shifting demographics, changes in the workforce and the communities we serve, it is imperative for MMCSC to ensure its workforce is provided with the tools necessary, not only to support and treat each other with respect and dignity, but also to provide culturally competent care to the diverse populations served by the hospital, according to Dr. Vozos.

“Honoring the diversity of our staff and communities, MMCSC is committed to making diversity and inclusion a part of our fabric, where everyone, can serve and be served in a culturally appropriate manner,” he says.

MMCSC offers Diversity and Inclusion education and training to all employees and volunteers. Through this training, employees gain insights, strategies and skills for engaging coworkers, patients, families and the community and lead to better outcomes in patient care.

  1. So basically they will be hiring less qualifed Doctors!! As long as you look a Certaint way you’ll qualify for the job even over a more qualified not so diverse doctor. Let me explain something, no one cares what the doctor looks like, it’s about skills!!!

  2. Smartypants you are well aware that top doctors come from every type of race and creed. You probably are concerned though that diversity will take the place of meritocracy as the primary factor in hiring. We need to so careful to express ourselves with clarity. So we are nut misunderstood as looking down on others.

  3. we want the best and most honest doctors, we really don’t care and are not impressed if they are from the minority or not, lets not fall prey to the foolish liberal left, that are destroying this country by making our police and fire departments full of minorities whether they are truly the best for job or not.
