Nurse from the Nurses Union today took to the streets in Lakewood for better pay and contract at Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus and Barnabas Health Behavioral Healthcare Center.
“Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus and Barnabas Health Behavioral Healthcare Center and New Jersey Nurses Union have been in negotiations since March without coming to an agreement,” the Union stated.
They wrote, “Registered nurses should make competitive salaries to keep staff at the hospital/center and for recruitment. The hospital proposed a 1.25% raise in August 2019 and 1.5% raise in August 2020. Clearly BHRWJ, one the largest, most lucrative healthcare systems in the state does not value nurses, the backbone of patient care. This proposal is just simply insulting to our members. Nurses are the most trusted professionals, and we know what is best for the care of you, our patients. Is it too much for this employer to want the same for you? Based on the hospital’s responses and language, it clearly IS.”
Nurses were seen standing near the hospital on Route 9 in Lakewood, holding signs asking for support – and honking.
Frank J. Vozos, MD, FACS, Executive Vice President, RWJBarnabas Health and Chief Executive, Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus responded.
“The nurses at Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus and Barnabas Health Behavioral Health Center are beneficiaries of the most comprehensive nursing continuing education program in the state, at no cost,” Vozos told TLS. “In addition, every nurse is eligible for the tuition reimbursement program in the amount of $5,250 per year. Our staffing meets or exceeds the stringent state staffing guidelines and compensation paid to nurses is competitive with nursing salaries throughout the area. We look forward to continuing the negotiations in the best interest of our patients, nurses and medical centers.”

Unfortunately this will not change anything. Best to look elsewhere for work. Nurses are in demand. That increase that is being proposed is pathetic.

Does anyone know what 1.25 percent increase amounts to? It’s not even 50 cents an hour. What a joke!!!! The hospital closes without nurses. Pay up or shut down
Nurses deserve ALOT MORE than they earn and they deserve EVERY penny!
As the saying goes, “Do you want to speak to the doctor in charge or the nurse that knows what’s going on?”
The hospital system that they merged with makes $ 20/hr more than the same nurse at MMC and shift differential is more. We are the same hospital and should be on equal grounds.

I plan on starting nursing school in the fall of 2020 I’m getting scared now is this a career where you get abused
@hannah before going into nursing you should know nurses are abused and underpaid and definitely under appreciated and having family life is extremely challengingdue to the 12 hr shifts.
That being said the work they do is of utmost importance it doesn’t matter how good the doctors orders are.
It’s how good of a nurse there was to implement it.
The work they do is rewarding in the sense that they know the extremely hard work they do is life saving work
