PHOTO: Some have wondered, and contacted TLS, why Shop Rite has labeled a mushroom Crabmeat mixture as Kosher, and is being sold in their Kosher Experience section. The product, labeled as “Stuffed Mushrooms with Crabmeat Stuffing”, has a Hechsher on it by Rabbi Moishe Chomsky of Lakewood, although the ingredients lists Crabmeat as one of their ingredients.
TLS spoke with the Kosher Experience at Shop Rite who apologized and said it was a label error and it should have read ‘Imitation Crabmeat’. TLS-CH.
I still dont get it. Shop Rite can label their products. They have access to lables with Hechshers? Doesnt that have to be over seen by the Mashgiach. Does not sound Kosher to me.

Note that TLS spoke to the Kosher Experience – not ShopRite management. Looks like the labeling error was at the Kosher Experience level, not the store level.

Kosher ex is in shop rite and owned by shop rite but it I’d controlled by Chomsky. There was simply a mistake when entering the info on the machine that they did not enter the word imitation
I’m sure that you are very kosher and never ever ever EVER made a mistake when you print or write something but the rest of the world really is not as careful as you are. ( in fact that’s why I probably wouldn’t eat in your house……)

It’s actually “emese fish” (I think it’s made from pollock), it’s just “falshe crab”.

i hope this isnt a coverup. it lists shellfish in the allergy ingredients also (see enlarged picture) pretty scary.

Calm down. This was a kosher “imitation crab product.” The wrong code was entered on the machine, causing the mistaken label to be printed out.
Odds are that the computers are connected, and someone pulled the wrong label template or inaccurately programmed the Kosher Experience scale.
Imitation crab meat is commonly used in kosher sushi.
What you have is likely a mistake, not a cover up.
My suggestion, trust the hashgacha or don’t, then move on your lives…
at least shop rite has labels and prices how many times i go to (moderated) and nothing is labeled or priced till you get to the register then your in for a surprise
To #3, FYI every company that produces both kosher and non kosher has access to the OU or other natuional hashgacha mark. Mistakes do and can happen as well as deliberate fraud.
we should have closer scrutiny of shoprite & dont bring your kids there there used to be covered magagzines that showed they care about the community but now they even have screens that show terrible pritsus
Dear TLS editor, your article is misleading. Until you get to the end it appears that a non-kosher item was labeled kosher not that a kosher item had non-kosher ingredients mistakenly listed. People not reading the article carefully are likely to lose faith in the mashgiach’s competence. Perhaps you can reword your article. Thank you.

We need frum management for Shop Rite.
The story was as follows: The product was and is kosher. The scale label system which has security from Kosher logos being used by the non kosher sections, did not have a proper product description for the stuffed mushrooms. The department manager told the mashgiach to use the non kosher PLU code which gave him the shell fish label. It was not a good decision.
I think that the important lesson is that if you see something like that, don’t go announcing it in the mikva or the coffee room. The first thing to do is to bring it to a mashgiach’s attention to correct. The Chofetz Chaim speaks about this at length in relation to a speaker. It certainly applies in this type of setting as well.
in the interest of full disclosure i would like to suggest that someone from kosher experience should post pictures of the kosher imitation crabmeat label alongside the treifa one so people can see that it was an honest mixup.
hey #13: how do you know about the magazines? I UNDERSTAND IT MAY BE A PROBLEM but putting it that way… sounds like you make sure they are covered every time you shop. Just look away and do your own thing, or DONT SHOP AT SHOPRITE. Thats why NPGS is around.
