Military Base Near Lakewood Expected to House Afghan Refugees

Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, just a few minutes out of Lakewood, is being prepared to temporarily house hundreds, if not thousands, of Afghan refugees being brought to the United States following the Taliban takeover of the country.

A tent city has been set up on the grounds of the base and food, medical supplies, water, restrooms, and equipment are currently being set up, with Afghans expected at the base as early as next week.

The news, first reported by the Wall Street Journal, came just shortly after Governor Phil Murphy sent a letter to President Biden saying he would welcome Afghan refugees to New Jersey.

Some have argued that allowing refugees who can potentially be security risks into the state is a bad idea.

The Pentagon has already named three other bases where refugees will be housed – Fort Bliss in Texas, Fort Lee in Virginia, and and Fort McCoy in Wisconsin.

Other bases also being considered for temporary housing for Afghans include Fort Pickett in Virginia, Camp Atterbury in Indiana, Camp Hunter Liggett in California, and Fort Chaffee in Arkansas.

The Pentagon is also reportedly considering US bases in Japan, Korea, Germany, Kosovo, Bahrain, and Italy to house Afghan refugees.

  1. Who could differentiate between the real refugees and the Taliban hiding amongst them?!?
Hope they don’t allow them outside the base until they’re properly vetted.

If there is one lesson to have been learned from this debacle it’s:
    Do Not Underestimate the Taliban.

    • This is such a racist, embarrassing comment. That’s all this means to you? And are you aware that many of the Afghan women fleeing are university educated professionals? Or young girls escaping the evil of the Taliban? I’m shocked that this is how people are responding on a Jewish website.

      • 1THEY WILL MAKE more money cleaning your house than they made in Afghanistan with their education.
2They will also live a better life in ocean county then Afghanistan.
        3. They may have been a doctor in afghan but their credentials wont be accepted in usa and may be forced to clean homes.

        • 1. What is your point? The original comment was still racist and embarrassing for a Jewish website.
          2. Forced displacement and emigration is traumatic.
          3. See #1.

  2. How could these comments be so cruel? These people have helped our country and we owe them after making such a mess. The footage that you’ve seen over the past week doesn’t make you feel like you want to do something to help these people? Do you have a heart of stone?

  3. After they leave the camp I don’t think they will stay here, they will probably disperse themselves south & west to a lower cost of living.
Mexicans are better workers than they are. Afghans are weak workers, very relaxed and easy going, they are suitable to drive a limousine and that kind of work. America needs all types to make America.

    • Your racist rant is as stupid as it is wrong. The illegal aliens that come to America are motivated people, because they faced terrible odds and succeeded. That is why they are more likely to be good workers.
These Afghanis are the people the Taliban hate, which makes them more likely to be educated, and to not be extremists. The work they are investing into escaping should show us how motivated they are.

  4. i heard they will be taking apartments in west gate, and also the new vishnitz where the old flee market used to be, may be giving the basement apartments to them

  5. I do hope these refugees will be welcomed and have higher expectations than being someones cleaning lady.

I volunteered at the refuge camps in San Clemente when Saigon was falling. It was a most gratifying experience.

    Remember we once were strangers.

  6. I am shocked with the comments referencing more “cleaning ladies!” That is appalling!! Many of the refugees are very well educated. You need to read and do more research.
And then to compare work ethics of Afghan to Mexican?
    Really??
What has happened to the “inclusive” Lakewood?
Each of us were immigrants at one time.

  7. If we all blame Roosevelt for not letting in refugees from Europe at the time of WWII, then it only follows that we should be happy that these refugees are being allowed into the country. Don’t be hypocritical.

  8. If they can be vetted properly, I welcome them with opened arms.

Don’t forget what these people are running from.

    Beheading

    Hanging

    Amputation of limbs

Never to be able to live in freedom.

So yes, let’s all welcome them, and may they prosper and be successful in the great USA!!

  9. We don’t own America, New Jersey or even Lakewood… we are in Galus here and are strangers in a friendly and accepting land B”H. If the world would have accepted us in the 1930’s we would have a very different story to tell our children. The immigrants are what keep this country going, not the lazy stimulus begging good for nothings. We are all children of immigrants, let’s feel for one another.

  10. if Mr. Murphy would have a vision for these escapees then he would realize that unlike those who emigrated in the past to NYC who spent months planning to adjust here we are hosting entire clans who lived in peace and prosperity and were suddenly uprooted and therefore they need to be given the opportunity to succeed on these shores and farming, cattle growing and milking will just not work out for them so Mr. Murphy and Mr. Biden need to set up vocational training for the older ones and a fast track college admission for the younger ones and the government should be reaching out to local businesses to see if they can offer any basic skills courses at the army base itself like nursing, computer networking, construction, food service and electrical work or similar locally based industries and then see if the local factories and contractors can absorb the previously trained workers at a government subsidized wage schedule so that they can begin earning and quickly and successfully merge with their social peers at the economic level

  11. The reason they chose these army bases, is because they have a political agenda begind it. They are trying to flip the only nj Republican, and they are bringing in people that may be very dangerous to the Country, but they care more about politics than safety. That’s why we have to stop voting Democrat.

    • 1. New immigrants/refugees can’t vote.
      2. The Afghan refugees are allies of the United States which is…why they are refugees.
      3. This is a nonpartisan humanitarian issue. Both sides support rescuing our Afghan allies.
