Mentally Unstable Armed Man Apprehended on Roof Following Standoff With Police

Lakewood Police on Friday evening apprehended a mentally unstable and armed man following an hour-long standoff, Police tell TLS.

At about 7:25 PM on Friday evening, police received a call about a mentally unstable father who had barricaded himself in an apartment at the Crossroads Apartment complex on Kennedy Boulevard.

Upon arrival, police discovered that the man had a gun, and that a 12 year old autistic sister of the man was in the apartment with him – though she was not being held against her will, police say.

Police swarmed the area and secured the perimeter and building, Detective Captain Paul Daly tells TLS.

After some time, the man, armed with an illegal handgun, climbed out of his apartment window and made his way to the roof of the building, Daly says.

About an hour after the incident began, police used a ladder to gain access to the roof and apprehended the man without incident. He was cuffed and taken into custody.

Lakewood SRT Team was called in, but were not needed, police say.

The suspect, who had outstanding warrants, was charged with Possession of a Weapon, Possession of a Weapon for Unlawful Purposes, Heroin Possession, Endangering the Welfare of a Child and with Domestic Violence Harassment, Daly says.

He was transported to the Ocean County jail and is being held in lieu of $125,000 bail, Daly said. TLS. [File Photo of standoff].

  1. We need to start banning illegal handguns as soon as possible. How can we allow a mentally unstable man to be able to have access to illegal handguns? Where are our politicians? Why haven’t they banned illegal handguns yet?

If you finally make illegal hanguns illegal, then these mentally unstable people won’t be able to get their hands on them anymore and terrorize the rest of us law-abiding citizens who abide by the law and remain unarmed and helpless.

  2. Yid? Really? Did you read what you just wrote? Come on!!! Ban illegal handguns? I’ve got news for you… illegal handguns are already banned! That’s why they’re “illegal”. and yet, mentally ill and unstable people (these are the “bad guys”) still manage to get their hands on these (illegal guns). NO GUN LAW is going to stop that, I’m afraid.

  3. Illegal handguns are already illegal- news flash- anybody- anytime can get a gun, not doing it through legal means makes them illegal. More gun laws do not help if someone wants one. That whole comment above is terribly confusing.

  4. LOL. That was my point. That banning illegal handguns will not stop illegal handguns….. because they are already illegal!

Criminals will still get their hands on illegal guns. Only the law-abiding citizens will be prevented from having guns, and they will be helpless to defend themselves.

My comment above was paraphrasing liberals and progressives.

Some people need everything explained, I guess.

  5. Look at how the federal government banned drugs and illegal immigration, and yet these federal bans don’t seem to stop criminals from using drugs and from illegally entering our country.

Does the federal government really think its ban on guns will stop criminals from getting their filthy hands on them? It will only stop the rest of us law-abiding citizens from defending ourselves from these filthy criminals.

Maybe that’s what the federal guvmint really wants………

  6. Yid- you are right to an extent that these state gun laws may not help in every situation, even many of them. However, that’s why we need federal statutes that make it more difficult for guns to be obtained in states with lax gun laws so that they may not simply be purchased there and trafficked here.

  7. Once again: do federal drug laws help? Of course not! Why do you think federal gun laws will help?

Answer: they won’t. Only the law abiding citizens will listen to the federal gun laws, and will disarm and be helpless. The criminals will continue to get the guns just as easily as they get drugs.

And our country will be a more dangerous place.

Chicago. Murder capital of the USA, has se of the strictest gun laws in the USA.

    Think about that.

  8. Quote “that’s why we need federal statutes that make it more difficult for guns to be obtained in states with lax gun laws so that they may not simply be purchased there and trafficked here.”
DO YOU THINK CRIMINALS and MENTALLY DISTURBED CARE ABOUT LAWS They will always break the law , here is a thought wait I cant shoot you yet ,need to register my gun first so I do it with a “legal “weapon . thats how dumb some of these laws are

  10. NO – we don’t need a more powerful federal government – they are already out of control. We are slowly loosing our freedom and liberty in this country. All the making “illegal” does is make us honest, law abiding citizens criminals by making what we have illegal – limiting clips to “10 bullets” isnt going to make one honest person more safe. If 3 guys break into your home – they have guns – you had better be a great shot or your probably dead. in a different vein – the Lakewood Police did a great job – kudos

  11. ok again, a lot of these guns are obtained by criminals in other states and trafficked here because when they buy them there, they are not subject restrictions. if the government places restrictions on these purchases on the federal level, then it will obviously become more difficult to be obtained. They may still have access to them, but it will not be as easy. Thats where stricter sentences come in to play for violations of these laws to keep the criminals behind bars longer and to act as a stronger deterrent. I dont know why you believe that drug laws have no use or impact on drug use and trafficking… perhaps you can provide some supporting evidence? Lastly, these laws do not aim to dissarm law abiding citizens, nobody is saying you can’t have a gun, that is a complete overreaction and extremist rhetoric like what you might hear on some of these crazy talk shows.
