Menendez, Booker Announce $18M in Federal Funding to Expand Affordable Housing, Strengthen Communities; Over $1 Million for Lakewood

U.S. Senators Bob Menendez and Cory Booker today announced the awarding of a combined $18,750,973 in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Office of Community Planning and Development (CPD) to support the revitalization of communities across New Jersey.

“Revitalizing New Jersey’s struggling communities takes a comprehensive approach that recognizes the importance of safe, affordable housing, economic opportunity and the services individuals and families need to overcome obstacles and secure their future,” said Sen. Menendez, ranking member of the Senate Subcommittee on Housing, Transportation, and Community Development. “That’s why I’ve always fought for the resources our local communities need to transform their visions into reality.”

“Expanding access to affordable housing, boosting economic opportunities, and reinvigorating New Jersey’s struggling neighborhoods all help our communities succeed,” said Sen. Booker. “Federal investments like these are crucial to lifting up our communities and creating long-lasting change for all New Jerseyans.”

The funding announced today comes from three grants designed to revitalize struggling neighborhoods and expand access to affordable housing. They are: The Community Development Block (CDBG) Grant, Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG) and the HOME Investment Partnership (HOME).

Earlier this summer, the senators announced a combined total of $31 million in HUD grants that support the growth and revitalization of communities.

  1. I’d rather see a grant for traffic safety, infrastructure, a few nice parks, or especially girls high schools. Lakewood doesn’t need more housing until the rest of these issues are handled.
