A Mass Casualty Incident was declared in Lakewood this afternoon after high levels of Carbon Monoxide were found inside an apartment building, officials tell TLS.
The Fire Department was dispatched to the Woehr Avenue apartment building around 3:30 PM, and upon arrival found the CO levels at around 600 PPM, sources say.
An MCI was immediately declared, and dozens of emergency personnel responded to the scene to help evacuate the residents. The Red Cross, as well as MCI units from Brick EMS also responded to the scene.
A total of 58 residents were tagged and assessed by emergency personnel at the scene, though none had to be hospitalized, officials say.
The residents were initially allowed back in to one area of the building that was cleared, and finally allowed back into their apartments around two hours later, an official said.
The cause of the CO was reportedly from faulty hot water tank.
