Today was the first official day of the Muster Employment Area Zone, and Officials say it was a success. TLS spoke with Mayor Steven Langert who said “I’ve been meeting with different Latino groups and leaders over the last three months to ensure it’s success”. “He added, “this is just the beginning. As time progresses, we’re looking to do whatever possible to make sure the zone is useful and beneficial to all parties involved”. The zone was set to open April 1st, but was postponed. (See related articles here and here).
Police Chief Rob Lawson also commented on the success, and said he was very pleased that the Day Laborers took advantage of this new work area zone, and was pleased with the results, says Mayor Langert.
The ‘Pick up zone’, which initially met some opposition from many in the Latino communityin fear of getting picked up by the wrong parties, was orchestrated to divert the Laborers away from Clifton Avenue, and instead have one designated area for the Laborers.
go steven!!!
Just yesterday I was reading in the Asbury Park Press of crimes committed by people here illegally. In many cases it was reported these people will deported after they serve the time for their crimes.
I understand the benefit of cheap labor but I truly believe we are taking serious risks in the interest of saving money. Aside from the potential physical danger, there is often no recourse when these people steal or do damage to our property.
Being in this country illegally is against the law is it not? Why are we accommodating this behavior by creating a pick up zone?

great idea lets invite ALL the illegals in the area to come to lakewood. and they will bleed our economy and you want tax relief, how? you are giving away our tax money to support a crime. good work steven
STOP THE INSANITY!!! Why are we helping to promote the ILLEGAL employment of undocumented aliens.
Where is it? Me no find it.
lg its all from ABOVE
where is it?
the majority of them are hard working and honest. you get a good days work from them and you help provide food and shelter. you are apprecaited and so are they. you can not match there work ethic and you can be sure of that.
stupid comments…. they are here anyway, at least get them to congregate in one place for MANY reasons. less loitering on clifton, less traffic on clifton, etc…. for those of you who want to find fault with EVERYTHING Langert tries I suggest you try to look at the big picture before posting idiocies.
Undocumented immigrant driver (unlicensed) kills man. Undocumented immigrant cuts off man’s ear. Undocumented immigrant house cleaner steals valuables. Ain’t it nice the town provides a “muster zone” for all the undocumented immigrants. I wish ICE would come and “muster up” all of them.
The Feds force us to educate illegal aliens in the public school system, we are also not allowed to discriminate so anyone that shows up with a drivers license and a resident alien card we have to consider them for employment. On the other hand if the Feds catch you hiring them you can face jail time. So if you fear jail don’t hire any Spanish speaking people however if you fear jail don’t discriminate. But the bottom line is, if you want to get the job done at a fair price you need to hire someone from the muster zone.
I was there this morning at 8:30 AM. The only person there was a Public Works Employee trimming the bushes. I asked him “Trabahando?” and he answered that the township pas much better than any private employer. Mustardzone is a farce!!
