The fear of sitting in traffic prompted many parents to keep their girls home from school this past Friday, TLS has learned.
According to an official who was in touch with Mosdos, some classes were approximately 50% empty on Friday. Several girls schools were closed altogether.
With no busing due to the holiday, many parents felt it just wasn’t worth the “Shlep”, and/or feasible – due to work schedules – to transport their children for about two hours of school.
The schools that were closed for Friday apparently shared similar sentiments.
Though bus companies are required to transport even on the holidays, as earlier reported, the schools agreed to forgo busing on X-mas, as well as partial busing on Thanksgiving.
Busing will be provided on New Years, officials say.

we need to have our Holiday’s too
I don’t understand why the place wasn’t full. Is it harder to arrange a carpool or to drive your kids )when MANY men and women are home due to the holiday) than having them stay home?
Plus there was no traffic. As many Jews as there are in Lakewood a legal holiday takes away half the cars.
There wasn’t much traffic, however, with girls’ schools ending at 11:30 on Friday, carpooling across town both ways may have seemed not worthwhile.
It’s different to drive a carpool when there’s a day of school. The girls have two hours of school on Friday. If you live across town by the time you get home from driving its time to pick up. That being said I can not understand how we justify to our children keeping them home from learning on such a holiday.
I bring my son and daughter to school and back home every day!!!! And did it this past Friday.
Shame on you if you have buses everyday and didn’t bring your kids in Friday!!
I told my girls they could stay home friday. the schedule made it virtually impossible to do both the girls and boys pickups. I told them I had absolutely no problem with them staying home if they spent part of the time helping for shabbos. Girls missing 2 hours of school is just not the end of the world as long as the aren’t bored. Those who want to pat themselves on the back for exerting themselves to make sure their girls got those 2 hours in can do so. Live and let live.

to 12:00 to 9:15 to 11:30?
if they had to stagger the times, why couldn’t they make the day a half hour longer? did that occur to them?

plus the kids claiming “everyone in my class is staying home – I will be the only kid on school!”
but not for me. I will gladly drive my kids. worth even two hours of peace!

Is this an attempt to scare us into voting to raise taxes to keep paying for busing?
Kudos to Tashbar who, instead of cancelling school, extended the day a half hour to help parents avoid the traffic. Showed the boys the importance of even a few hours of learning.
Ppl dont realize how healthy it is for kids to get an off day, even if there is bussing. If it works for you, and one of the parents is available most of the day, its a great way to spend quality time with him/her and make them feel special. Enjoy !!
Wen it’s a big holiday for the Jewish community they dnt have school for a week or so. It’s 1 day for non jewish. Stop the complaining. We work even on your holiday . Just let us enjoy the few days we can actually stay home and be with our family. Some drivers work from 6am to 930am then 1:15pm till 11pm. And good luck trying to force non jewish drivers to work on thier holiday , they would simply just not show up, some might quit if you try. Then where would you be a few drivers short and a lot of kids will not get picked up. So just deal with it. We dnt take off a week or 2 , it’s just half a day, most drivers were in to do mid day.

Seeing what happens at home on a Friday and seeing mommy make Shabbos
By keeping the children home last Friday, we taught them the importance of approaching and entering Shabbos while being in a calm and relaxed mood for the family. No, Mommy can not have a beautiful Shabbos ready if she has to spend so much time in the car fighting the traffic. The kids also got to help prepare for and set up for Shabbos.
I sent all my kids to school,
It was very comfortable and was happy to do it

im trying to understand something: there are so many frum drivers in lakewood throughout the year so where were they on Dec.25
Here in Monsey, we dont have busing from a day before xmas, to the monday after New Year. We survive, laughing at u all! a fuss about no trans. for 1 day!!
