A 19-year-old Brick man has been charged by a grand jury in a hit-and-run accident last year that claimed the life of Shalom Werther, 17, according to a report in the APP. An Ocean County grand jury recently handed up an indictment charging Paul G. Kulha III with knowingly leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in death, which is a second-degree crime carrying a prison term of 5 to 10 years, if convicted.
Werther was crossing Cedar Bridge Avenue, near Melville Avenue, shortly before 8 p.m. as first reported on TLS, when he was fatally struck by a car.
Five to ten for a fatal hit and run? That’s it?
#1 he didnt intentionally hit him, he left the seen so you can charge him with murder it was an accident
While this guy deserves to be punished to the fullest extent of the law, it is my hope that the Werther mishpacha have a nechama from the RBSO for the terrible umglick.
I do not know the Werthers personally but I remember my hergaishim that terrible evening. What bothers me is that while I go on with my life, the Werthers and too many other mishpachos are in so much pain.
May Tisha B’Av be a Yom Tov this year so that we will not hear of any more tzar.
Kee va moed. Bmheira beyameinu.

Has the Ribono Shel Oilam been reduced to RBSO? Uch un vey . . .
to #2- how can you even say that when a family is still mourning the loss of their son and brother???? Reports from witnesses said that the car was swerving and hurdling down cedar bridge.
and you write that he didn’t intentionally hit him??? If someone can drive so recklessly and hit another person, he is called a MURDERER!
– from a close frriend of the werthers
how about the way many others in the community drive, speeding, blocking corners, turns in the middle of clifton avenue, no full stops at stop sighns, etc etc, we are home to the worst drivers in the country.
not to mention all the cell phone use while driving…….
I can’t believe you.
When I read #3 heartfelt comment I said Amen. All you do is complain. May the רבוש״ע give you the ability to see things in a positive light.
PS Did you notice the word רבוש״ע. How is that different than RBSO. It’s rashei teyvos in caps and acceptable.
Please stop sensationilizing another person’s pain. It is highly insensitive to post the video of the scene. For someone who knows them personally, just the front picture, without actually viewing the video, is terribly painful to see. Please use better judgement in the future.
what makes you say that the pic is from the scene and not just a picture?
Not trying to make people angry. I just think if everyone slowed down a little and was a little more careful, tragedies like this could be avoided.
I have known the driver since he was born. He is a good kid. He just got scared. And who is one to say how he was driving RE: #9 Of course the family is getting back by nagative remarks. He basically has been raised by a single parent and had some problems. When I see how some people who have a so-called-crime as this one and gets away with it breaks my heart. The driver should be given some consideration as he comes from a loving mother and grandfather and other sieblings.
to #11 he was drunk at the time and not only that i heard he had just got out of juvi
To #11-
You are just saying that because you know him.
Everyone wants to assume the best of people they know. But reality is is that he hit a person that eventually died and fled the scene. Now that deserves a punishment now matter what!!
Maybe he will learn something being put away. But it certainly WON’T bring back the family’s dead son.
There was a petition submitted to have a traffic light installed by Vine Street/Washington Square almost a year ago, but it was denied. There is currently a petition being circulated to have the speed limit lowered from 45 MPH to 35 MPH. There is no traffic light from MLK Blvd until Clover St. This road has a lot of people stopping to make left turns and cars barreling down at 45 MPH have a hard time stopping behind them or changing lanes soon enough.
There have been a couple of people hit while crossing and R”L a death.
Too many times cars have been rear ended while waiting to make a left turn.
You can sign the petition at Out To Lunch (try the iced coffee), or at any other store at the Cedar Bridge Marketplace.
shame on all you people . just mind your own buisness and find a job instead of making insane remarks about such a tragedy . im sure the family would rather all you idiots who have nothing nice to say just keep your comments too yourself . im sure god for bid if a tragedy hit your family you wouldnt appreciate having idiots posting on TLS all ur stupid input. so go open a gemara or a tehilim and mind your own buisness.

I have also known the driver for over 10 years. I live right down the street from the “thug life” wannabee. He has been a common criminal terrorizing the kids in our neighborhood for years. He is a high school drop out who has been in trouble more than anyone in our area of Brick. I know of my neighbors having to take him to court for stealing their child’s bicycles when he was only 16. And shooting at others with BB Guns. This came as no surprise to anyone that knew him. He was destined for prison.
