The Lakewood Police Department will be holding a gun buyback program this coming weekend, Police Chief Rob Lawson tells TLS. The program, held in conjunction with the PBA and Prosecutors Office, will give gun-holders the opportunity to turn in guns with no questions asked, in an effort keep the streets of Lakewood safer.
The last time such a program was held in Lakewood was about ten years ago, Chief Lawson said. That program brought dozens of guns of the streets.
The Chief explained that the program is not only intended for illegal gun-holders, but also for any gun-owner who feels they no longer want to have a gun laying around their home.
Similar programs around New Jersey have also been highly successful and have taken dozens of powerful and dangerous weapons off the streets.
The event will be held Saturday, April 21, at the Lakewood Community Center and at 500 Arlington Avenue, from 10 AM – 2 PM. TLS.

how much are they paying ?
Great opportunity to get rid of those old useless guns and use the money to buy a brand new, shiny .22!
While I can understand the objective of getting illegal weapons off the street ,I really doubt that gang leders are going to be turning in their illegal weapons, for those who own guns that are legal they can just sell them to a legitimate dealer any time to get rid of them of they no longer wish to have a gun in their home.
NO 2
foolish comment!
I know several people who have had relatives pass away and then have to deal with what to do with firearms that person had owned. they might end up sitting in the attic because they don’t know what else to do with them or how to legally transfer ownership etc. Perfect opportunity to get rid of it.
Let’s see how much they will pay. Typically they offer $200 range. There is a program now in a town- $800 for a gun!! Might be worth the trip. I have a 38 that cost me $250……
Saturday, April 21 no jews will turn there guns in!!!
i dont think this is really gonna help crime at all if someone wants to shoot this aint makinghim think twice
why dont they do it on sunday also i have one that i whould like to turn in and whould like to some one please tell me how i can wo asking any q
This is so silly.
1. No gangster is turning in his gun for $100
2. potential for kids to steal gun from their parents uncles ants grandparents & turn it in for $
3. who is paying for this the tax payer? why cant we have a gun store like shoreshot setup there, they can buy the guns and they can resell them in their stores why does the tax payer have to fit the bill
4. the “buyback” may be the destruction without investigation of guns which may be potential criminal evidence or stolen property that should be returned to their rightful owners
5. If someone committed a murder with a gun and he has been holding on to not knowing what to do with it now he just turns in his murder weapon and it gets destroyed
These are valid concerns I’d like Chief Lawson to address them.
where is everyone getting this dollar figure from??? there was no mention about price. usually no more than $75 per assault weapon and semi auto hand gun usually $25-$50 for revolver and rifles and shotguns.
This is so silly.
1. No gangster is turning in his gun for $100.
[A]- your wrong. the average crack head who see’s a free $100 as a good amount of drugs = he just might turn in his gun before he opts to go try robbing a gas station. many gang members might turn in the gun looking to get the $100, with the hopes of having that gun replaced(but still its another illegal gun off the street). Many gang members want to get rid of the gun used in crimes, or that have fingerprints and are nervous of holding onto a “hot” gun and will take the $100 for it.
2. potential for kids to steal gun from their parents uncles ants grandparents & turn it in for $.
[A]- doubt that will be happening as weapons are locked up generally, and who cares. the irresponsible gun owners who leave weapons within a child’s reach = deserve to have it removed from the home.
3. who is paying for this the tax payer? why cant we have a gun store like shoreshot setup there, they can buy the guns and they can resell them in their stores why does the tax payer have to fit the bill?
[A]- the tax payers are willing to pay the small amount of money for the implementation of such programs, to get illegal guns off the streets. You cant possibly be this silly to view the safety of possibly yourself – for the small amount this will cost tax payers.
And you cant have ShoreShot buy guns that dont have paper work or are possibly stolen, or are wanted in questioning. Its against the law to buy “hot” anything, especially weapons.
4. the “buyback” may be the destruction without investigation of guns which may be potential criminal evidence or stolen property that should be returned to their rightful owners
[A]- all the guns returned will be checked via NCIC prior to proper disposal. disposal could mean return, destroy, or kept for future officer training.
5. If someone committed a murder with a gun and he has been holding on to not knowing what to do with it now he just turns in his murder weapon and it gets destroyed
[A]- again, they wont be thrown into a melting pot right away. they will be checked via serial numbers and then properly handled for ever the case may be. If the weapons were stolen, they will be returned.
Avi this program has taken thousands of guns off the street. obviously it works = and your wrong.
WHAT ABOUT THE YEDIN THAT HAVE TO GIVE BACK ITS SHABBOS
if i would not have to worry about a gangster breaking into to my house to protect myself when i will have to blow 4 bullet holes in his head before he will shoot me then i would give back my gun
what a shame we dont have enought protection around here !
#12 mrconservative you contradicted your self in every one of your reply’s, and all your reply’s are not consistent with conservative values
1. wow your naive if you think a gangster will turn in his gun for a few $ & if they committed a crime with it and thats why they are turning it in then this program is facilitating criminals in getting rid of the murder weapon
2. i dont think a child will steal the gun for $ but a teen can dont you think a gun can be child proof and not adult proof
3.Fact gun stores “can” buy any gun which comes through their door they dont have to do a background check on the gun i have watched it many times and have done it myself you come in drop it off without paper work and they give you cash and an hour later its in their showcase for sale
4. again all the guns are in a big box and they do not go through every gun even if they did its not possible to pin ever gun to a crime or an owner just by the serial # and they dont have the man power to do this anyway
5.I’m not sure how you can call your self a conservative and say “this program has taken thousands of guns off the street. obviously it works” 99% of all Gov. programs do not work and this is just another feel good liberal program which leaves guns in the hands of criminals. and wastes money paying people for their junk guns they want to get rid of
Any drug dealer hoodlum or any other illegal gun carriers are packing heat cause they want to and they ain’t given it up for anything
avi are you crazy? if the program didnt work – the buckets would be empty. you are the one who contradicted yourself, and claim the program doesnt work – and then you said they dont have enough man hours to go through every gun. so which is it, are the buckets empty(program doesnt work) or the buckets so full that they dont have the man hours to sift through every gun(obviously the program removes unwanted guns)
and dont ever question my stance on politics, simply because im totally fine with people who dont want their weapon, to be able to turn it in without questions. this is a voluntary program, not a mandate AND THATS WHY AS A CONSERVATIVE I SUPPORT IT!!
if this was mandatory, you best believe i wouldnt support it.
-and your BEYOND wrong. every and any gun sale needs identification, so no criminal is going to sell the gun knowing its gonna come back to him in case its registered stolen.
this works great for those people who happen to find a gun through some strange means either on their gangster wannabe son, or by thinking they wanted one for illegal reasons and then changed their minds. if people are willing to turn in the weapons they dont want – im all for it. its one less that can fall into the wrong paws. every time this program is run in any county it always ends up netting plenty firearms.
ANYBODY! weather a Heir or a Hoodlum, a Conservative or a Crack Head, that is willing to come and drop off a gun for 25 Bucks! clearly has no respect or appreciation of Firearm! Such people should NOT have guns! If we the tax payers can buy them for 25$ its a bargain! Guns are great tools and we are very fortunate to live in a country that gives us rights to ownership. However guns must be respected and should never fall into the wrong hands.
This program has been very successful in getting deadly weapons off the streets. Even if it’s only one weapon, it’s one less on the street. The money that will be given in exchange for the weapons is from donations. It would be nice to see these positive programs get more support from the community as a whole. We ALL want the same outcome…a safer community for all.
Please help support our efforts.
