kayakers stranded emsA strong current stranded two Lakewood teen kayakers in the Metedeconk River last night, Detective Sergeant Greg Staffordsmith said today.

At approximately 9:45 pm last night, officers responded to a report of two parties stranded in the Metedeconk River.

“One of the boys contacted 9-1-1, and through use of GPS, an approximate location was determined,” Staffordsmith said.

Responding Officers, accompanied by EMT Jose Ortiz from Lakewood Emergency Medical Services located the victims, two 17 year old males, who were stranded on an embankment.

“The males indicated that they had ventured out in their kayaks almost three hours earlier when they were eventually grounded on the embankment. Due to a strong current, they were unable to paddle back to safety,” Staffordsmith said.

The boys were safely brought back to shore after Officers on scene were able to deploy throw ropes and pull them across the river.

They boys were not injured, however one Officer suffered a minor injury to his ankle. He was treated and released from Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus.
