Lakewood police officers were instructed to crack down on vehicle window tint, police tell TLS.
The order reportedly came from the Patrol Captain over the weekend.
Police say they were ordered to pull over vehicles that contain illegal tint on their windshield, or on front driver or passenger windows.
Drivers that have a medical condition – such as Polymorphous Light Eruption – can apply for a special tint sun-screening permit from the MVC.
UPDATE 12:20 PM: Though several sources within the LPD confirmed there was a crackdown on tint, Police Captain Tommy Langenberger says there was no specific order on it, but rather a general order to step up patrols and stop vehicles that may be suspicious.

Seriously?
Does the LPD need a list of priorities?
I guess now that they have “running stop signs” and “talking on cell phones” under control. what else should they be busy with??
The LPD can make plenty of money every day at 8:30am when at least 2-3 vehicles run the red lights on my children’s morning bus.
I appreciate this crack-down. It’s been many years long over-due! There are plenty of bad guys trying to hide either their faces or illegal items being transported in their vehicles through the illicit use of the tint. There have also been hit and run situations where victims were unable to get any description of the offending driver due to the heavy tint.
There is good reason why it’s illegal (there are also legal exemptions if necessary) and law enforcement should absolutely enforce this law.
A word of caution to our officers in blue: Please approach these vehicles with extreme care. One never knows who/what may be lurking behind those dark windows. We need you to stay safe, so you can continue to keep the community safe! You will always have our best wishes.
Tinted windows was always a threat to our officers and civilians thank you Lpd for keeping us safe
Looks like I’m gonna have to drive with my windows down for a few days. I hope it doesn’t get to cold.
Please alert us when this activity is over thanks;$)
Does this mean LPD finally caught the burglars who have been terrorizing this town for months?!
Can LPD focus on many other more important things then me trying to look cool with tint windows
@lol & ok
It appears the town is so safe and that they finally have reached the bottom of the checklist.
Imagine what’s next…
I’m glad to know that running red lights and stop signs or driving while texting or talking on your phone isn’t as important as having tint.
I guess I’ll be running lights now as I won’t be stopped once I remove my tint.
can someone explain this law please? also what happens to out of state registered vehicles? why cant bad guys hide in those?
I hope all the LPD members that have tint on their personal car will first have it removed before they ticket anyone else
I been a police officer for 20 years in Lakewood Pd and the crack down is TRUE .
In NJ you are legally only allowed to tint the windows in the 2nd row and beyond. Realistically speaking, a tint that lets in 35% light and above will be easy enough for the officer to see through but will still block harmful UV rays. Most factory tint falls into this range and of course you won’t get a ticket for factory tint.
You people are so foolish, you’re embarrassing yourselves. The TLS post just two or three before this one is “LPD Arrest Armed Driver After Routine Traffic Stop.” How do you think they catch the big criminals. It’s the small routine infractions that net the big goons. Sheesh!
Now, every car with rolled down windows is an automatic suspect… and a qualified candidate to be pulled over…
@Police officer can you explain the ratinal?
Dear Police Officer,
I thank you for your service. Are you going to remove the tint from your private vehicles before ticketing me?
The crackdown is working two nice arrests over the weekend from this crackdown on suspicious activity
One with drugs and one with weapons involved
If the window is tinted how would you be able to see the gun that the officers observed this weekend
Do we need a bullet thru a tinted window to make us wakeup?
While I am thrilled that the police department has been making good Motor vehicle stops, when can we expect some arrest for these burglaries ??
It’s gone on way too long
What about police officers that have their vehicles windows tinted out? do this apply to them also? just asking
Give me a break. There is a reason why only 4 states have illegal front tint.
I’ve never understood why such dark tint was allowed on cars. Lately it seems many, many cars have very dark tinted windows, including the front side windows, and in many cases the windshield.
I hope the crackdown continues. I hate driving next to a car where I can’t see inside the vehicle at all.
Remember, many officers have tint on their private vehicles. Hopefully they will lead by example.
I’m glad we have some couch potatoes here (with a keyboard as a weapon!) trying to decide and give their opinion what’s important for the active police officers on duty 😉 B”h it’s come to that!!
@Yanky (a fellow couch potato)
Remember, Couch potatoes cant continue to be couch potatoes without a qualified audience of couch potatoes!
Thanks for being there for us & thanks for being glad!
