The Pokémon Go craze has prompted a local police department to issue a safety alert this morning.
“The Lacey Township Police Department has recently observed a large number of residents playing the Pokemon Go mobile game within Lacey Township,” police said.
Pokemon Go is an augmented reality game, in which the players use the GPS of their mobile devices to search for virtual Pokemon characters, as well as “Pokestops” in various areas throughout the township.
Groups of Pokemon Go players have been observed gathering at different times and locations within the Lacey, Lakewood and other townships and cities around the U.S.
“Since its release, it has been nationally reported that players of the game have wandered onto private property, walked into traffic, and operated their vehicles while distracted, specifically with their attention solely on their mobile devices, completely unaware of their surroundings,” police said. “This distracted behavior can lead to serious injuries for those involved.”
“The Lacey Township Police Department is advising residents playing this game to please be alert at all times, and stay aware of their surroundings to avoid potential problems while playing the game. Additional safety tips include, not driving or utilizing a bicycle, skateboard, or other devices while interacting with the app as you won’t be able to do both safely. Furthermore, be cautious not to trespass on private property or areas you normally wouldn’t, if you weren’t playing the game.”
The Lacey Township Police Department is encouraging residents playing this game to do so in a safe and healthy manner.
