List those potholes; How to file a claim for damage

potholeWe’ve been receiving many complaints about potholes around town – on Township, County and State roads.

Feel free to list pothole locations in the comments section so they can be brought to the attention of local officials.

You can also call the DPW to report a pothole at 732-905-3405.

What if my car was damaged from a pothole? How do I make a claim?

You must first determine if the pothole incident occurred on a local, county, State highway or on a toll road. For incidents on local or county roads, please call the respective township/county or visit their websites. You can reach Lakewood’s Municipal Offices at 732.364.2500.

If your accident was on the Garden State Parkway or the New Jersey Turnpike, please visit http://www.state.nj.us/turnpike/maintenance-issue.html or call 732-750-5300.

Accidents on the Atlantic City Expressway are handled by the South Jersey Transportation Authority. You may visit their website www.sjta.com or call 609-965-6060.

2. Upon determining that the pothole incident occurred on a State-owned highway, you may fill out the PROPERTY DAMAGE CLAIM-SHORT FORM.

3. The Registered Owner, and not the driver, of the damaged vehicle must complete, sign and date the Notice of Claim and mail it to the address on the form within 90 days from the date of the incident to preserve their legal rights. The preferred method is via certified mail return receipt requested. Please keep copies of the claim form and submittals for your records.

4. The claim form must, at a minimum, include:

(a) An estimate for repairs and/or a receipt showing proof of payment for any repairs made;

(b) Specific location where the incident occurred (nearest exit, mile post, cross street, relevant landmarks, etc.)

(c) A copy of an official police report, if one was filed at the time of the incident;

(d) A copy of the Declaration page of the auto policy for the registered owner of the vehicle. However, photos of the pothole are not necessary.

5. Please allow 3 to 6 months for your claim to be resolved. You should note that payment/reimbursement is not guaranteed.

Just to repeat what others have said…

Oak St between Albert is awful. The problem is, they keep wasting resources on filling it with appears to be gravel. A simple rain comes and it washes away the gravel (or whatever it is).

It needs to be repaved completely. The temporary fixes (which last only a couple of days) are even worse than doing nothing, as it gives the illusion that it is fixed causing people to go right over the potholes and damage their cars.

And while they are repaving maybe they can get rid of that worthless roundabout.

To everyone that wants me pavement on Oak between New Hampshire and Albert, it is not possible because of the old car that is parked there on the road for the past 10 years. Moving the car will damage the way the street looks.

Carey St between Forest and Madison has some big potholes that have been filled multiple times and continue to open up due to all of the BMG traffic. Look near driveway of 411 Carey St in particular. Thank you very much.
