I work hard to make a living, and my wife works hard as a teacher, and don’t have the option of a babysitter on a kollel schedule. For years the schools themselves ran affordable daycare for the teachers’ kids and it worked. Then it was taken over by a CHS daycare, and families like ours who aren’t eligible were left out. We had to scramble and pay much higher rates.
Now with CHS winding down, it’s time for schools to step back in. Teachers are asking for raises or leaving because daycare takes too much of their paycheck. But instead of constantly throwing money at the problem, why not solve the root cause? Affordable daycare would do more for teachers than a raise.
And another point: when schools call meetings for teachers and don’t provide babysitting, it puts us in an impossible spot. Either the husband stays home or we pay outrageous “drop-in” fees to operators who know they can charge whatever they want because we have no choice. That’s not right.
If schools really want to support teachers, they need to bring back reliable, affordable childcare. That would make the biggest difference.
TLS welcomes your letters by submitting them to [email protected]

CHS winding down is hurting everyone…not sure why you think teachers are suffering more then anyone else.
True CHS is hurting many people, but the letter writer is not trying to fix the problem entirely, for that would be almost impossible with one solution. But instead he is just suggesting to bring back a good plan that we know worked for teachers, and the teachers, their families, and thr schools would benefit. Now obviously if the schools benefit we all gain.
point isnt teachers its everyone not eligible for chs was paying inflated pricing because of chs the end of chs is a good thing hopefully rates will come down for everyone
scoop censorship…what is wrong with this comment?
Everyone is suffering due to CHS ending…not sure why we are discussing teachers in particular
It’s funny, because a few weeks ago there was a letter on TLS complaining about CHS and the outrageous registration fees the daycares charge on top of CHS paying them which comes out of the parents pockets.
So hopefully CHS coming to an end will bring the outrageous prices and fees down for all the parents who can’t afford it or aren’t eligible for CHS, and people will be able to breathe easy again…
I.don’t.get it. What does.playgroup prices have to.do.with chs? Playgroup morahs and babysitters are self.employed and have the liberty to.charge whatever.theyre in.the.mood of. What’s gonna change now that chs is fading away?
In the short term, Playgroup Morahs and babysitters are going to raise the price because of an increased demand.
In the long-term, many of the employees at daycares are going to leave and open their own playgroups (more profitable to them) which in theory means a decrease in rates because of an increase in supply, but in practice won’t mean anything of the sort because they are only going to replace the classes they once ran at the daycare.
The Morahs raised their prices because of CHS. I don’t know that anything is really going to change bec once prices go up and someone is used to or needs a certain profit margin they don’t usually go down.
Most things that are offered for free to low income end up causing that item to be much more expensive. An example would be the increase in child care costs since CHS. Our food is much more expensive than in England. I’m assuming that’s due to Foodstamps.
Food is more expensive than England? What are you talking about?
Have you ever been to England?
The couple times that I have I’ve noticed that food prices there in pounds are much higher than food prices here in dollars and that’s before you factor for the exchange rate
CHS is winding down because the frum community voted for trump and republicans by 95%. I dont know what else to say other than you got what you were voting for
That’s definitely maybe.
Well, Democrats are blaming. These cuts on the “big beautiful Bill“, It was clearly a political decision by the Democrats in Trenton to cut this particular subsidy.
there was no direct connection between the funding for this program and the “big beautiful Bill“ and even with the funds that were cut by the federal government in the “big beautiful Bill“ there is still a roughly $3 billion budget surplus and they’re only claiming to have a $30 million projected shortfall in the allocated funds for this particular program.
So, while we can absolutely debate politics for days on end, I think that your argument is at least somewhat disingenuous.
That’s dem politics. If you look into it. What happened when trump cut funding for Medicaid. Murphy felt the best way to fund the medicaid benifits that trump cut, was to cut CHS because that’s where people in the state will feel it and blame Trump.
This is a good thing!
So they were never eligible for chs but now cheering on its demise and hoping the school will once again offer childcare! How nice!
I don’t understand why this has to do with teachers. We are a hardworking family who can not afford daycare—maybe something can be done to bring the costs down for us.were the ones that chs is made for, tbh, not really geared for teachers in the first place.
