Letter: This Purim Take Ten For Klal Yisroel

One year in the Yeshiva Gedolah of Montreal the Rosh Yeshiva, Rav Mordechai Weinberg zt’l called over several of the bochrim to make an unusual request. It was several days before Shavuos and the Rosh Yeshiva asked us if we would undertake to set up shifts so that for the “three days of hagbalah” there would be twenty four hours of non stop learning in the Bais Medrash. He inspired us by relating that In Volozhin that was the norm all year long and that we would be following in their steps if we undertook this mission.

Although at the time the yeshiva’s enrollment was only about forty bochrim, we decided to give it a try. It entailed having at least two sets of chavrusa learning during bain hasedarim and even in the middle of the night, in addition to keeping the regular sedarim. Even though it is now many years later I still relish the wonderful feeling of achdus and accomplishment that it produced.

This concept is also mentioned in one of Rav Zilbershtein’s sefarim as a way of increasing “shemirah” . A community in Eretz Yisrael successfully employed this method upon advice of gedolei Yisrael during a time of frequent terrorist attacks. They established 24/7 of Torah and tefillah through the participation of everyone in their community and B’H they did not suffer even one attack.

We can do it too. We can do it for our community, for cholim and singles, for refugees in Ukraine and for all of Klal Yisrael’s needs bgashmiyus and ruchniyos. Sign yourself up for a ten minute shift of learning and/or tehillim on Purim day and connect with the klal in the most meaningful way. Those ten minutes will enable the entire Purim day to be one long stretch of tefilah and avodah with immeasurable potential to bring the yeshuos we all need.

Attached is a simple form to easily enable this to be set up by a class, shul or housing development. The names of those to be mispallel for can be added to the form. May we all merit to see great yeshuos in the near future.

  1. Wow. This is takeh a wonderful idea and a pretty easy undertaking.
I’m sure there are people learning every minute of the day, somewhere in Lakewood. But the more the merrier.
And if we do it overnight, that’s very Choshuv.
