Letter: Thank You Police Chief Greg Meyer

Several months ago, I was involved in a frightening accident, having been struck by a driver on his cell phone.

B”H I made it out safely, though I missed several days of work as a result of the trauma and checkups. It took weeks to get my car back from the shop, and months until I got over the trauma. But I’m sure many others who were involved in accidents can share similar experiences.

Why am I sharing this?

Because I was reading the comments on the Scoop’s story about the crackdown in Lakewood, and was appalled to see some people opposing this, saying it will cost drivers a lot of money if they get a ticket.

Are they for real? They’re more concerned about a few dollars than the lives of other people? A car can be fixed, but injuries can last months, and killing someone cannot be reversed.

This crackdown was long overdue, and I have no question in my mind that anyone who wants a safer town appreciates it too.

Thank you Chief Meyer for taking safety seriously and weeding out the dangerous offenders.

Chaya J., an accident victim.

  1. I can second this letter. I am an accident victim of a local resident driving without a license (under age driver). I needed months of physical therapy and too much missed time from work. As well as having to purchase a new car. Thank you Cheif Meyer for cracking down! I hope this leads to a safer town and healthy residence.

  2. Yesssssss! Go LPD! Flood the streets and slap all reckless and careless driving with hefty tickets. Perhaps serious deterrents can make people THINK, make our streets safer, reduce the horrific frequency of crashes and rollovers.

  3. 1000% agree, wish I could send attachments, however the comments do not allow it. I was one of the “lucky” victims of someone running a stop sign and flipping my car (he was moving at over 50 mph). Costed me over 20K to get myself back to be able to walk again, and I am still living with back pain, over 6 years later. Enough is enough.

  4. i agree!!! I was driving down central ave today towards route nine with one hand on my horn. Cars just coming out of side streets with out even hesitating by the stop signs!! Seriously crazy!!
